Intended for a young adult (13-18 year-old) audience, it will serve equally well adults hoping to learn more about classical Indian literature (in this case, the Ramayana) and how it is read and received by modern Hindus. The book's small size --only 68 pages-- belies its range and depth. Author Jacqueline Suthren Hirst, a British academic, not only manages to tell the story of Sita in her many versions (from the original ancient Sanskrit poem by Valmiki to modern comic books)and explain Sita's importance and influence in contemporary Hindu life, but also to gently inquire about Sita's relevancy for the 21st century.Sita's Story contains numerous illustrations, including classical and modern renderings of Sita and photos of women's altars adorned by Sita.
