Either the author wrote this some while ago, or he has little world experience outside of the United States. I have lived for ten years in a small village in southern Belize about half of my time. (Spread out over each year). The change in Belize over that time has been amazing. Some bad (like the increase in crime, and need to now lock doors), but mostly good. In the last two weeks I have bought almost everything I used to get in the United States at half the price. Example ten meals of chicken, roast loin of pork, steak, duck breast, lamb chops, all or Derek by phone and delivered once a week to the door for a total of $55 US. Freshly caught fish and lobster - eight meals average $4 a pound, every kind of fresh fruit and vegetables (except out of season avocados and berries) at rates the same or cheaper than in the States. 14 flavors of ice cream at $24 a gallon, yoghurt to die for, and fresh milk and cream, again ordered and delivered to the door. Community a mix of 3/4 local, 1/4 American, Canadian with some Europeans. I couldn't finish the book, as I got so fed up with the author.
Firstly, the book is poorly written, making it hard to read.Secondly, I have been living in Belize for some time now, and can tell that he has not a deep knowledge of Belize. Of course, every country has his problems, but this book is not accurate.And finally, I saw that he wrote another book about Panama, which isn't for him neither. Maybe nothing outside his backyard is good for this gentleman.
I liked it but for me the short length doesn't justify the price. I've read several books which are mostly the pros of moving to Belize, and I'm glad to finally read something about things like the insects and diseases of the country. A description of the coastline was helpful as well. Most of the other writers leave out any description of the beaches, and googling Belize images is mostly of pristine white sand under several feet of crystaline ocean water. I'm just glad someone chose to write something more realistic. It's better to look into Belize with eyes wide open instead of being enticed there by books that leave out quite a bit of the true day to day.
An absolute waste of money. Any profit this worthless scrib made on this elementary level book is criminal. Buy anything Lan Slader writes instead. If I could give it negative stars, I would.
Really brought out the reality of Belize,,,, most books i think give false expectations of expat living this book showed how good we have it here in the states, I will go down and check it out for myself but with a whole and more rational view. (we bought a home in Yuma AZ, for winter...) but still plan on heading south to "vacation" in south America
I thought his book was accurate. I have researched Moving to Belize speaking to residents, realtors, belizean police department on Ambergris Caye, read books, government reports and my Belizean attorney. Everything in this book I have read already and offers no new insights. I am looking for a simpler life, warm climate with significantly less hurricanes than Florida. I am ok with less. Some are not. What I understand from this person’s perspective is that it wasn’t enough for him. It is a personal choice.
Very honest and straightforward. Covers all of the negatives without being judgemental.
I got this before I knew a friend was moving back to the states and realized Belize was not for him after only 4 months. "Corrupt" as he put it. Poor medical care experienced first hand.
