This story comes towards the end of a long line of story arcs leading up to this novel. Needless to say if you aren't caught up on what had been happening up until this point you will likely not understand the novel to the fullest extent. It is pretty dark and *SPOILER?* Dick Grayson is Batman at this time, which may disappoint some if they were not previously aware of what has been happening. It is kind of cool however to see Mr Grayson take up the mantle of The Dark Knight after all these years. Tim Drake is also 'Red Robin' now, not... plain Robin. Anyway pretty good but if you want the really great classic Batman experience and you're new to the graphic novel scene, hit up Batman: Year One first, then Batman: The Long Halloween to start off with. I rented this book at my local library.

The book is awesome, the mask is creepy as hell. My child will have nightmares for the rest of his life. It wasn't a present for my child, I just jumped out from under his bed with it on. Didn't know boys could scream that high pitched. Suffered a bit of tinnitus from it, but I guess it's deserved.

This is one of the best Batman stories, for sure a must-have on the shelf. I would recommend it for almost anyone, even people who haven't picked up many comics before. If you don't know ANYTHING Batman, you might need to go on wikipedia for a little crash course on Batman chronology as this story takes place far along in the batman career - It isn't even Bruce Wayne under the cowl, it's his ward Dick Grayson. If that's already too intimidating, maybe read a couple starter trades before this, but make sure to come back here and give this book a read! (I'd say you should know generally who Oracle, Jim Gordon, Dick, and Red Robin are before reading, but it's honestly not too important, because the plot is very good anyway.)The story is suspenseful and smartly crafted. Scott Snyder paints a good picture of Dick Grayson and I appreciate that because he is one of my favorite characters. He operates and thinks slightly differently than Bruce would, and it's subtle but it works well. The artist also captures this distinction. And man, whoever colored this trade sure knew their color theory! The art is extremely compelling and some pages left me staring at them just to admire the artwork. All in all super happy with this purchase.

Takes place during the Batman Reborn era in which Dick Grayson had taken over for Bruce after the latter's seeming death during Final Crisis. The Black Mirror sees Dick in the cowl and going up against a group of black market dealers who specialize in selling macabre weapons and trophies of Gotham's worst villains (such as the crowbar used to kill Jason Todd). While Dick fights to put a stop to the black market group, Commissioner Gordon struggles with the return of his mental ill son James Gordon Jr. In one of the best early tales of his Batman career, Scott Snyder weaves an intricate and disturbing tale of psychosis. James Jr. is one of the most creepy Batman villains to date and he proves his menace without superpowers or a flamboyant costume. Using great flashbacks, Snyder builds the story of Commissioner Gordon's slow realization that there is something wrong with his son and the horror he feels that he can't do more to help him. Featuring a terrific ambiguous ending, The Black Mirror is not only one of the best Batman Reborn/Dick Grayson era Batman stories, but one of the best stories of Snyder's early career with the character before his terrific run during the New 52.

I'm a big Dick Grayson fan and a lot of people recommend his run as Batman. The Batman and Robin run is meh (5/10). This was pretty boring as well. The villains kinda stink, I'm not a fan of the art work. I might be biased because I just finished it, but the beginning is a bore, the ending is really good. The Joker and Commissoner Gordons son show up.I'm probably giving it only 3 stars because I got my hopes up. I love Battle for the Cowl and I really wanted to see why Dick Grayson is the heir to the cowl other than being awesome and the first Robin. People told me "this is where he proves himself the better Batman" but the whole story was him messing up but somehow pulling it off. Which I love about him. Makes him more relatable than Batman or any other hero. We all got bad days and some tragic lives but no one actually dwells on it. Dick is a great character and this story does him justice, but I don't see it as him being the "best Batman".3/5 for Art I dislike and a disappointing story.

Scott Snyder's run on Detective Comics after his Vertigo work with American Vampire and before his work on the New 52 Batman is interesting: this follows the Dick Grayson's Batman and the larger "family" as Bruce Wayne is running Batman, Incorporated, and the Gordon family is in particular prominence here. Snyder is definitely trying to bring a more noir element back to the Batman world after Grant Morrison blow that up expanding the Batman character into various other elements of Batman's mythology. Yet, Synder doesn't try to undo Morrison's work in anyway, just re-grounds in it a consistent tone. Jock's illustration work here is strong, but some reminiscent of Jim Lee's work on Batman. This is several story arcs that appear separate but add into one coherent story about the Gotham and the Gordon family. Snyder does great work here, but one can also see why the soft re-boot was increasingly necessary for New 52 to make the larger continuity seem more consistent. This is strong writing and solid art, and Dick Grayson's Batman does feel enough like Bruce Wayne's for continuity to be there, but different enough to stand out. In a way, it was sad it was re-set so completely in New 52 despite the clear reasons for doing so. It, however, was a good hint to the feel of Snyder's run on the New 52 Batman with Bruce Wayne back primarily in Gotham.

Very good quality!! wish the book was hardcover though

The quality of biographies and autobiographies is largely dependent upon the life lived by the individual and how the story is told. Someone could have lived a full and exciting life but tell about it in a drab, dull way. Whereas someone could have lived a mundane, boring life but narrated it in a colorful and interesting way.Assata lived a very interesting life, much different than the majority of us, and she told her story in an uncomplicated and intriguing manner. I had never heard of Assata Shakur until I saw her named mentioned in another book I was reading. Now I'm quite upset that I didn't know about her sooner or that I hadn't read her story when I was younger.Assata's simple yet powerful story of her life in New York as a young woman searching for a way to best serve her people is amazing. I absolutely love her toughness, her mindset and her ability to think for herself. Although she joined the Black Panther Party she was not hesitant to point out its flaws and what they needed to do to improve. She took a critical thinking approach to everything she did though her actions weren't completely devoid of emotion. What happened to her as an adult is eerily similar to what happened to so many other freedom fighters/Black activists in the 60's and 70's: they were either killed or imprisoned. Fortunately, she wasn't killed though it wasn't for lack of trying. That night of May 2, 1973 had death sentence written all over it. But she survived and fought one legal battle after the next until the system finally succeeded in putting her away. It was a matter of: "we have the resources and the means and you do not."Assata was an amazing woman and it literally radiates from the pages. And she tells her story in a straightforward way. She's not trying to exhibit how much she knows or even how much she's done. It is not a verbose book with $10 words in there to wow the reader. It is a simple no-nonsense telling of what her life was like in the Black urban areas of New York as a child, how she became the pro-Black woman she became and how a system of institutionalized racism ran her over with their 20 ton train. She conspicuously and wisely omits a lot of names and details when it comes to some of her movements and meetings during her Panther days and, of course, of her escape from prison. Still, you learn all you need to know about Assata and the powers that she was up against. But she named herself Assata Olugbala Shakur for a reason:"Assata means 'She who struggles,' Olugbala means 'Love for the people,' ...Shakur means 'the thankful.'" I would say that she embodied all of that and I'M thankful she lived the life she lived, told the story she told and I'm thankful I got a chance to read and appreciate it.

Sister Shakur tells us of her life from adolescence, to growing up in poverty, and finally to rediscovering herself and falling in love with her Blackness. She speaks on how Hoover's COINTELPRO effectively tore apart Black resistance movements by falsely arresting, murdering, deceiving, and doping the Black community. Those of you out there that are reading these reviews pay close attention to those with 1 or 2 stars. You will notice most of them didn't bother reading the book. Their review is based on whatever fiction they've been taught to believe is true. Do your own research and compare it with the words of Sister Shakur. And to those that haven't read the book and are giving negative reviews because your 5th grade History teacher, Mrs. Slurbanowski told you Assata is a bad person, I want your next book to be a detailed history on COINTELPRO so that you can see exactly how your government interacted with the Black community during Sister Shakur's time on these shores.

This book is a must read for anyone who is studying how the System of Racism White Supremacy operates. Assata is a Sheroe to black people. Assata’s activities in the struggle for Black Liberation and to neautralize the System of Racism, naturally made her an enemy to white people. It is interesting that for all the lip service that is given to blacks by white people on forgiving whites who practice Racism White Supremacy on blacks, the white collective has not to this day forgiving Assata, who they attempted to murder on the New Jersey Turnpike. They relentlessly and obsessively continue to hunt Assata and call her a cop killer, when it was the Racist cops that were attempting to kill her and her comrades, like they have done to many, many black people throughout history. Assata is a strong black female that decided to accept her earthly assignment to try and produce Justice in an unjust world. I highly recommend this book to young black people who are seeking to gain a better understanding of of the world that they have been born into. The problems Assata faced as young black female growing up, is still being experienced to this present day 2018 by all black people.

This book is an engaging read. It's painful at times because as a white person I am ashamed of how Black people have been treated. I was isolated from Black people growing up so I had no idea and still didn't until the last few years, just how terribly the United States has treated anyone who is not considered white. Assata is an amazing Black woman. I am grateful she is safe in Cuba.

A poignant exploration of Assata Shakur's journey from girlhood through adulthood, serving also as a chronicle of the Black Power Movement and the evolution of U.S. race relations since the Civil Rights era. In many ways, the book complements "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," offering a black female perspective on American society of the 20th century. As you would find with most any memoir, there are silences and gaps that seem to beg for more discussion and illumination. However, as a thoughtful political commentary on the shortcomings of the American criminal justice system, capitalism, imperialism, and the society's inability/unwillingness to deal forthrightly with ongoing racial inequities, this book is highly recommended.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! I purchased this book after having a few big losses/negative events happen in a row. What this book helped me with was to realize that everything does happen for a reason and that if I looked back at my life introspectively, all of the bad things that happened to me (which really stunk) had positive outcomes/blessings eventually. If you're having a tough time and feel like you need something to help inspire you that it will all be ok, this book is for you!

The tennis player Novak Djokovic recalled in his book SERVE TO WIN when he was a kid and wanted to play tennis and it wasn’t a traditional sport in Serbia “…for the [tennis courts] to be installed across the street where I spent my summers? Some higher power was surely at work”.Anytime that I read stories like that I remember this book WHEN GOD WINKS. It is packed with lot of stories that are beyond chance or luck. It has three parts:Part one: Opening your eyes to see the winks,Part two: Using God winks to enrich your life, andPart three: Coincidences in all walks of life.SQuire Rushnell shares anecdotes about him, his friends and people that he interviewed.I love when people share stories like that. The feeling of being protected and guided is such a relief when I am uncertain getting into the unknown that change brings. It spikes the faith that I am on the right track as I remember my own experiences as well.As I can remember, it changed my perspective since I was a kid about what can be called impossible. When I was 10 years old I was interested in the music group of the moment and to me it was impossible to watch them beyond TV. Possible was to go to my brother’s baseball practice on weekends and this one in particular we went to a stadium located inside the only airport nearby. As my brother’s friends were telling me to turn around because the group was there I was refusing to do so and look foolish thinking they were lying to me. It was true! They were there! Watching the practice and waiting for their airplane. So anytime that I think something is impossible I always remember that day and what happened.

An EXCELLENT book and i would recommend it to everyone, it's not a book on religion but it is a book that will make you more aware that God is present and always listening and seeing.

I bought this book so long ago . . after watching SQuire on an episode of Good Morning America where he was a guest and talking about his "new" book. It struck such an awareness of where my life was at that point, I guess, that I had to buy it. I was so impressed at how you can use what he says and examples he gives as a guide in "paying attention" to your life. I have told so many others about it and was just doing so again today when I looked up to show her and wanted to add a review of my own. I listed my own God Winks and referenced that book in my life so many times that I will never regret having it in my collection.

I was recommended this book by a delightful woman I met on a plane ride to New Orleans. We were discussing the way God "speaks" to us in different ways and she said this book discusses how we see patterns or confirmations or thoughts but quickly brush them off as coincidences, when it's really God "winking" at us and giving us direction. I downloaded the book on the plane ride home and finished it by the end of my flight!!!! This book encouraged me to listen to my intuition and recognize that God guides us in ways that are unique. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is seeking to recognize God's voice or who is looking to find confirmation of their "unusual" experiences. It's not just a saying that "everything happens for a reason".

"Okay" book for readers who want a little nudge or wink of confidence. I personally believe that we are being nudged all the time, but it's hard to "translate" these nudges sometimes. Guess I was looking for clarity, which this book does not have (well, how could it know me that well, anyway?), but it was a cheery little voice of encouragement. Seriously, I would caution the reader to know that these "winks" which the book describes are close to the way fortune-tellers use words: suggestions which bring up feelings and memories we often confuse with our own remembered facts. So…in my opinion and faith, of course God winks at us, but do use your God-given common sense when you think a coincidence is telling you something.

I have purchased this book for myself and four friends. There is a real message here for each of us. When we read it we will understand the message that is so individual to me and to you. A must have book when you do not understand why some things happen.

Very well written development of process and understanding of subject. Book requires you to THINk and think I did. Did soul searching which lead to an inner peace and appreciation for what I have GODWiNKS not what I don't have confidences
