We found this book to be very, very helpful in planning side trips from our stay in Brussels. Also, going home via Amsterdam for only one night and it gave us an idea of what we can and cannot see that evening.

It's Ok. It help us. We had a great trip . I think we got our moneys worth.

Daytrips has everything you need to be a do-it-yourself tourguide. Trips are based on major cities in each country with estimated distances and times, so you can see what you want on your schedule. Each trip has at least one, and more often several, walking tours all of which begin at the train station (or bus stop if the area doesn't have one). The maps are detailed and clear; although I would recommend stopping at the local tourist information center and acquiring a map-locations for information centers are always highlighted. Each tour has some historic background on the area, places to visit and some dining suggestions. As a previous reviewer has noted, take prices and opening times with a grain of salt-they can and do change. I was a tour guide in this region (including Germany) for three years, and this book was always in my backpack. Without a doubt, Luxembourg, Belgium, and rural Holland are under visited by tourists. Luxembourg is probably the best-kept secret in Western Europe. The people in Benelux are friendly, especially towards Americans, prices are not outlandish and the scenery is excellent. HIGHLY Recommended.

This book rocked! We made last-minute travel plans to Brussles with no idea of what we would find once we got there. The book contains practical and interesting walking tour maps of plenty of towns worth visiting. This came in quite handy when we began taking the trains throughout Benelux using Brussels as our hub.Of all the books we brought with us on the trip (Frommers, Fodor, Time Out and others), This book turned out to be the most useful of all and was the most dog-eared by the end of our two weeks. We only used one of the restaurant reccomendations -- no great shakes, but then again, that was not what the book was for.

Once again, Eve Bunting does her magic.Through the eyes of a child, readers will learn about how Jews celebrate Chanukah as well as hear a retelling of how some Holocaust survivors cherished the celebration of Chanukah in Buchenwald. Passing the story from one generation to the next reaffirms the importance of following traditions. While some prior reviewers have pointed out some questionable flaws, the overall positive messages of hope and perseverance prevail. The book does an excellent job of touching on age appropriate information regarding the Holocaust.

nice story ,but have to wait couple more years to read it to my little grandson

lovely content, beautiful illustrations

great book & great service!

Beautifully told and exquisitely illustrated....We join a family on the first night of Chanukah. As Grandma has done every year, she explains their family Chanukah minhag (custom) which started during the Holocaust, "the bad time."When she and her sister, Great-Aunt Rose were young girls (twelve and thirteen), they were interred in Buchenwald -- probably the largest Nazi concentration camp inside Germany. When the youngest granddaughter asks why they were put in the camp, Grandma says, "The Germans didn't like the Jews." -- an attempt to trying to explain the inexplicable -- the Holocaust -- to children.Continuing the story, Grandma tells how she and her sister prepared for Chanukah by smuggling ("organizing") margarine, matches, and a potato into their barracks in order to be able to kindle one light for the holiday. Now, in safety and surrounded by family, Grandma once again hollows out another potato, pours oil into the cavity, and lights a threaded wick.L'chayim! To life!NOTE: The candle in the chanukiyah in the illustrations is on the wrong side. Chanukah candles are placed from right to left and lit from left to right. Perhaps this can be corrected in future printings.

I agree with other reviewers that it is a pity that Ms. Bunting's editors didn't assign someone knowledgeable to review the text and help the artist with moon phases and menorah placement. On the other hand, many of the Jews who love and celebrate Hanukkah do not practice strictly in accordance with dietary and other religious laws. What makes this book special is showing a festive, cheerful holiday having such significance in the practice of one's religion and being one's true self that Grandma, as a young girl, risked death to observe it. Scholars have often been somewat dismissive of Hanukkah, regarding it as a minor holiday, and yet it is a favorite for many people. This story helps us understand why. There is a message of hope, since Grandma has survived and is surrounded by a loving family, but the deft characterization of Great-Aunt Rose shows that suffering a horror like the Holocaust stays with one for life.As a school librarian, I'm finding this a powerful introduction to the Holocaust, as well as to Hanukkah. The children are baffled and horrified at the idea that anyone would be imprisoned, starved, killed, "just because..." - and even more aghast when we point out that the hate and killings continue now with Jews AND other ethnic/religious groups. The narrator's musings at the end of the story as to why Grandma wants to remember such a painful time in her life allow us to look at what we have to remember to keep it from happening again.

With dark brown and violet pastels, the authors tell the story of a Hanukkah celebration in a suburban Tudor home. Families gather, cook, celebrate, and eat. Sitting at the table with china and knit kippahs and nice glassware, they serve a beef brisket, latkas, and sour cream and apple sauce. I will assume that the sour CREAM is non-dairy, or else some Maccabees would have attacked this home as they did the Greco-Assyrians. But, I digress. Grandma takes out a raw potato. Was it for grating? No. Grandma and Great Aunt Rose tell the story of their first night of Hanukkah in the Buchenwald death camp. They risked their lives to steal a potato, and even though they were starving, they used it to make a candle to celebrate the holiday. They all place it next to the menorah, walk to the wintery yard, and watch the glow. They drink l'chayim under a full moon (although there can never be a full moon during the eight days of Hanukkah, since it has to be a darkened new moon (ooops!). A story of courage and triumph and family, yet with a few errors which can be turned into a learning opportunity when reading it to your kids

This story shows how each family can add its own memories to a traditional celebration, blending in things that make it more meaningful. In this incredible Hanukkah story, we see a layer of family history presented as part of the larger faith drama. This is emphasized in the art as well -- powerful duotone-like drawings are integrated with the full-color illustrations, giving the feeling of the past coming to the table with the stories told. I was particularly struck by the incredible faces in this picture book -- they are so alive with individuality, authenticity, and emotion. One customer reviewer has commented on the brisket and sour cream as being "nontraditional." I find this as a plus, personally. The traditional applesauce IS there (this reviewer must not have noticed), yet the family is not presented as a stereotyped cliche -- they have brought their own traditional dinner in with the rest of their Hanukkah foods and the one potato, which becomes the one candle, representing their struggles to maintain their faith, hope, and traditions alive through a Holocaust death camp.Considering the topic, this could be a hard book to read, but it is not -- it is sensitively told, a celebration of strength and resisliency, determination, family and faith. If there is a problem with how the menorah is lighted (I can't say), that would be a shame and should be corrected in reprintings, but I feel that the power of the book lies elsewhere and should be appreciated for its fullness.

I saw this book at the Lincoln homestead national park in Springfield, IL. It's a young adult novel, the story of a teenager who decides she is not going to be married off to a creepy neighboring farmer, and so runs away to join the Union Army in the Civil War. The historical perspective is good - here is a self-reliant young woman, who is able to provide for her family, for instance - although I wish there had been more details about the world around her, such as clothing details, etc. The story is solid and I enjoyed the read.

Really good for incoming 7th and 8th graders!

I was in need of this book for my daughters reading project. I found a copy online and was very happy when I received the book in great condition and in a timely manner.

Thank you for the book. The book arrived on schedule.

Good

It is 1861 and Sarah Louisa Wheelock, age fifteen, lives on a farm near Casey's Mill, MI, with her father, mother, sister Betsy, and brother Ben. Her older sister Clarice is married. She has learned to hunt and ride better than any boy. Their abusive father, who beats both Sarah and her mother, plans to wed Sarah to their odious neighbor, Ezekiel Kunkle, who is a widower with two children. So she runs away, dresses as a boy named Neddie Compton, and joins the Union Army. As Neddy Sarah is sent to Washington, DC, but after the first Battle of Bull Run she is discovered. However, obviously being good at disguising herself and acting a part, she is recruited by Allan Pinkerton to serve as a maid in the home of the notorious Southern spy Rose Greenhow to help with surveillance and see if she can find out how Rose is sending messages. She begins to fall in love with Lt. Sheldon, head of the surveillance team, but then has reason to believe that he might be a traitor. Will her position be compromised so that she is found out again? And what should she do about Sheldon? How weird is this! I obtain different books from different sources at different times and in different places and then put them in different piles to be read on different occasions. So the books that I am reading at any particular point are the result of happenstance. Back in 2011, I picked up some young people's Civil War fiction books while visiting in Gettysburg, one of which, No Girls Allowed by Alan Kay, is a completely fictional account of a girl who dresses as a boy to fight in the Union Army. I just recently started reading it, but before I finished it, I began another book entitled A Soldier's Secret by Marissa Moss which had been sent to me early in 2012 by the publisher for review and is a fictionalized account of the life of Sarah Edmonds who dressed as a boy to fight in the Union Army. Then before I finished that, I began reading Rinaldi's book which I had actually first seen in a 2006 Scholastic Book catalogue and then bought later in 2012 at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield Park near Springfield, MO. Rinaldi writes, "While Sarah Wheelock is a character of my own invention, I have based her somewhat on `Franklin Thompson,' the male alias for Sarah Emma Edmonds, one of the most famous male soldier impersonators in the Civil War." There is enough similarity so that having read A Soldier's Secret I was immediately able to recognize the resemblances, but Rinaldi's story is much more fictionalized, with changed names and many plot differences. Girl in Blue is well written and easy to read. It has fewer objectionable elements than Moss's book, omitting the euphemistic sexual references to male anatomy. However, while it is listed for ages eight and above, the "d" and "h" words are both used occasionally, the terms "God" and "Lord" are sometimes found as interjections, there are several instances of drinking beer, whiskey, and wine, and a few of the fighting scenes are a little intense with some gory detail. Therefore, I would recommend it for ages twelve and above. Rinaldi writes concerning the real Sarah Edmonds, "Her tenure in the army was longer than my Sarah's, and she never served with the Pinkerton detective agency," and said, "I have invented all the rest of the characters, with the exception of Abraham Lincoln, General McClellan, Doctor Hammond, Allan Pinkerton and his operatives, and Rose Greenhow and the women spies incarcerated with her at Fort Greenhow." While a couple of reader reviewers felt that the novel doesn't measure up to other Ann Rinaldi books and is not her best work, they still agreed that it is a suspenseful historical fiction story with a bit of adventure and a dash of romance. Amelia's War is another Civil War historical by Rinaldi.

Sixteen year old Sarah has lived at the mercies of an abusive and overbearing father her entire life, but she refuses to be handed off like property to a neighbor twice her age just so that he can help out on the farm and she can raise his three motherless children. She's determined to get away, and to serve her country as she knows she has the skill to do-as a soldier. Sarah is an accomplished marksman, she's brave, and she has no interest or intentions towards men other than serving beside them. Her biggest issue isn't even that she's a girl, it's that she's sixteen. Sarah perfects the art of mimicry and lying in order to make her way into the ranks, where she distinguishes herself and finds unique employment with the nation's first detective agency.I don't know if it's my recent disappointment in Fever 1793, my childhood love of Ann Rinaldi, or my tendency to adore stories about girls who dress as boys, but I devoured Girl in Blue, and enjoyed every second of it. Ann Rinaldi was probably my favorite author when I was about ten years old, and then somehow I completely forgot about her until one day she was mentioned in a Twitter conversation with Tara (Hobbitsies) and Amy (Tripping Over Books). I knew immediately that I must read something by her as an adult to see if my enjoyment of her stood up. So I wandered into the Tween shelving at my library to see which of her books they had, and when I saw Girl in Blue, the story of a girl running off to fight as a soldier in the Civil War, I knew I'd found my match.Ann Rinaldi writes fantastic historical fiction for middle grade and young adult readers that is not only well researched and accurate to history, it is full of rich characters and stories that will transport any reader to another time. To my knowledge, all of her books feature strong female characters (if anyone's read one of her's with a male lead, let me know), and the bulk of those I read as a child took place during or around the Revolutionary War. I did note that she's departed from this more in the years that I neglected her work, and I was excited to pick up something that took place during the Civil War. I learned from Girl in Blue that there were, in fact, at least 100 known women who fought as men during the Civil War. The character Sarah was based on one such young woman, Sarah Emma Edmonds, though their actual stories varied greatly. The detective agency that Sarah becomes involved with also actually existed, as the first such agency in the country. I loved that Girl in Blue was packed with excitement and intrigue, all of which touched on actual people and events-the best type of historical fiction there is!Sarah is precisely the type of girl we all love to read about. She's independent, strong, and brave. Sarah's only known men to treat her unkindly, so she's certainly not one to moon over them, and yet she's open to serving beside them with honor. The story of Girl in Blue is unexpected and in constant motion, unpredictable and never dull. Ann Rinaldi manages to show the blurred lines between two sides of a conflict, and paint with accuracy the intensity of feelings and loyalties during the Civil War. In addition, Girl in Blue reflects the important rolls that women played, not only as soldiers, but as nurses, spies, informants, and general support. My only complaint about the story, was that the ending seemed a little off. It was somewhat rushed, and required a greater suspension of disbelief than the rest of the story, which I was unable to muster. Regardless of this, Girl in Blue is highly recommended.

#20,373 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book started off entertainingly enough. There's a lot of humor. However, it never really moves on from the bumbling, humorous "everyone is out to get me". It was fun and funny the first few times, but by the time she's clearing things almost every page I just wanted to get to the main plot. By the time we actually reached the main plot I just didn't care anymore. I did enjoy the fae-ness of dealing with the Russian witches - you better spell out exactly what you want or you won't get what you thought you were going to. But our main character's constant ability to do, well, everything got annoying quickly as well. Overall the book felt more YA that adult. Not for me.

I really enjoyed the story and the characters, but the writing was terrible. If I hadn't been looking for something light I probably wouldn't have finished it. There were lots of small problems like mixing up 1st and 3rd person, those kinds of things I can ignore. The biggest problem I had was how one-dimensional and unrealistic the villains were. The most flagrant was the higher up FBI agent who shot at her in a room full of FBI agents and claimed he could get away with whatever he wanted. All of the bad guys, and there were a lot of them, were about the same. I wish someone had edited this mess and allowed it become something good.

This was a fun book with engaging characters and decent crime solving. What was lacking was any real emotional feelings from or for the characters. And while I believe the author did send the book to editors as he wrote each chapter (as stated in the afterword), if he was paying them for their services he was robbed. Too many instances of incorrect word usage, nonsense sentences and incorrect apostrophes kept throwing one out of the story.

Picked this Kindle book up earlier this summer, but never got around to reading it. Having read some reviews (after my purchase) that were a tad on the negative side I thought maybe I had made a mistake and wasted my money. This morning looking for something new to read I decided to at least check this series out and maybe read a chapter or two. It now about 6 pm and I've pretty much have spent the day reading the entire book one (and the prequel). I have to say I really enjoyed this book and will be reading the rest of the series. This was just the right kind of story I felt like reading today and I really enjoyed it. A bit humorous and funny, but with some interesting action. I thought the story was well thought out and IMO there wasn't anything wrong with how it was written or formatted. I would recommend it to anyone interested in paranormal fantasy series.

Lots of other reviewers have summarized the plot, so I’m going to skip by that to focus on the real crux of my problems with this book - the writing. What can I say, I write for a living and really, really appreciate good writing. This is not good writing. There’s an interesting premise and fun characters in here, but the bad grammar, mechanics, inconsistent use of contractions (example: “I’m” is used but then the same character says “I will” instead of “I’ll”), and simplistic style overwhelm the book. I notice that the author’s bio mentions writing lots of books in a relatively short period of time. That’s not producing good work, that’s churning in order to sell as many poorly written books as possible to ensure an income. I like the premise, I like Agatha, not crazy about Fergus, and I like Cat. The FBI agents are one-dimensional and terribly incompetent at best. It’s these dualities that expose the writer’s fundamental lack of skill. He crafts a decent plot but really needs a good editor to mentor him through building his technical writing and world-building skills. He also needs a good copy editor who will catch all the grammar, punctuation, usage, and missing word errors that riddle this book. I’ll keep reading additional ones as long as they’re available through Kindle Unlimited, but, if I have to pay for each book, there’s no way I could justify spending money on such poorly written books.

3 & 1/2 stars. Confusing and illogical bits:Item 1 : Agatha's magic. Very precocious. Very strong. Logical move; start training her early! "No school would have me". Because Aunt Camilla called all of them and scared them. And Grandmother is on the Council. What? So Grandmother teaches her. Surely Grandmother has powerful , helpful friends with special knowledge for the bits she can't teach? Why does Agatha have to go to Quantico, " The only pace that will have her"? Not logical at all. I think Mr Paul couldn't think of a good reason quickly. Note, the Council sends several teaches once she is there. Surely if they are willing to go there, they could have come to her home, were Grandmother is?Item 2 : Her first spells in Quantico seems to be all disasters, but once she is in the field, everything goes swimmingly. Hmm...Item 3 : At Quantico, people seems to know almost nothing about matters Paranormal (in site of having several Weres of various types). They are also very belligerant. This must be so she can give us a history lesson.Mr Paul. You yourself mention the well known facit that the victors write the history books... WWI was known as The Great War until WWII. Which these people did not have. Also, Germany did not start WWI. Serbian terrorist murdered Grand Duke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, and the local police, ie, the Serbiens refused to look for the rest of them. After a whole months, Austria sent federal police, and the Serbs screamed for help from Russia, in the name of Panslavism. Russia declared war on Austria, who called on Germany, as an allt. Germany was not really please, but did as the pact they had said they should. France screamed " Hurrah!!!" and attacked Germany, for no good reason at all. And England (the British Empire), joined, for the first time, on France's side, because they saw a good chance to make their Empire bigger. The USA didn't join until Russia stepped out, because of their revolution. The nastiest war in human history up until then. The Versaille "Peace" is without doubt the unfairest in human history, every.Deaf ears? Of course, but one must not stop trying.Anyway, out in the field, FBI Agents and others know a lot more, but are just as belligerent. What did I like.? The idea, very much. The facit that Agatha uses Old Icelandic as her spel language. (Although it is really modern Icelandic.)One HILLARIOUS thing. Did you do it on purpose, or has someone played a joke on you? General Varmkorv. Varmkorv is Swedish, and it menas " hot dog". The kind you eat.I will definitely read the next one.

This is a great set of three of Shakespeare's best-known works. The sound effects are often over-done (too loud and go on too long) but the vocal acting is excellent. I hope more of these recordings are released.
