I bought the printed book and have done a one week trip to Vienna with its guidance so I can say matter of fact that the book takes up no space to speak of, weighs next to nothing, and is packed full of useful details. It instructs the prospective traveler, then gets into the points of interest and provides a solid vehicle for planning a multi-day stay in beautiful Vienna. I found the lodging and dining suggestions spot on, all location details accurate, and the itinerary plans completely beneficial.

I needed desperately a break so I booked my tickets to Vienna! My friends have been three times there and they literally sold the city to me! The reason I prefer these 5-day guides on Kindle is that they are to the point. Not too much bluff. To be honest, I don't have too much time to read the Lonely Planet 400 pages on Vienna. If I wanted to do that, I would waste my 5 days that my employer allows me! On the contrary, these guides take you straight to the meat of the things. You can find bar, restaurant, club recommendations in the book! All very organised without too much narration! I have also added my email to their mailing list as they give away $100 monthly prizes!! I absolutely LOVE this book!!! Having come out in the late '70's, I barely experienced the cusp of the great gay heydays of that time before Aids came along and ruined the party. I never travelled to Fire Island, as I was too young. I did, however, have great friends in the small town of Macon, Ga. who became mentors to me, and who were well connected with guys who would come and visit from P'town and Fire Island. They would bring me 12 inch records and regale me with tales of their days in the sand and nights on the floors of the discos dancing to the pulsating beats.This book makes me feel almost as if I was actually there, in those days in the sun before the clouds rolled in. Bianchi has such a great eye, and this book really captures a time and place from a bygone era that sadly was stopped dead in its tracks all those summers ago. I sat and read the book and gazed at its pages yesterday afternoon while the afternoon sun streamed through the windows of our home in the mountains, and felt transported back to a place I'll never really know firsthand....still, this book is the next best thing. Cannot recommend highly enough this treasure trove of gorgeous photos of beautiful men living their lives freely and openly, and celebrating what it means to alive. Long live the dead....

As a long time aficionado of Fire Island Pines, I found Mr. Bianchi's book to be as magical and dreamy as the community itself. The photos are wonderfully evocative of a lost era. The special nostalgic feeling of those Polaroid SX70 images brought back a torrent of bittersweet memories of a place and time that has been nearly lost to history. But it is mainly the memories of so many beautiful friends who are now gone.... friends who introduced me to the Pines in 1979, and who guided me on my initial journeys to this mystical isle. And some of these friends are actually mentioned in his extraordinary text.And it is this text that accompanies the photos that I found most remarkable... and most moving. In fact I was moved to tears several times by the beauty of his prose, and the memories that were stirred up by it. He has found a way to bring back to me, in a profound way, one of the most life-altering periods of my life. And for that I am truly grateful.If you are a lover of this scrumptious sandbar that is two hours from New York City and a million miles from reality... or if you have interest in knowing something of it's history, get this book. I personally will treasure it forever.

I am a longtime Tom Bianchi fan. His books are so wonderful, that I blindly buy them knowing that handsome men will be contained within. These old Polaroids are a departure from his typical books, but I loved it nonetheless. The playfulness of these bare balls men running around are engaging and beautiful. I look forward to Tom's next book.

The book is a beautiful collection. You must read the text to fully understand and appreciate the pictures. I honestly didn't even like it as a picture book until I read what was written and developed an emotional connection with the pictures.I love it now and it will remain in my library.

I bought this book for a couple of reasons. One being the fact that I was on Fire Island during that time and I may have been in the photos. Two, my partner at the time, was there and I might see him in one or more of the photos. I lost him in '94 to AIDS. Lastly, I just really love the quality of the polaroid photos of that time. There's a softness and color to the images like no other photo technique. I was not disappointed. Tom captured a time and place that will never exist again. So with all of that said, I highly recommend this book for anyone that can appreciate the beauty of the men and artistry of Tom's work.

Remembering things past, beautiful documentation of a time of freedom and celebration. I visited the Pines several times in the late '70s with my man. We both enjoyed being a part of a special world and felt welcomed everywhere we went. We camped on the beach, watched the sun rise, brushed our teeth in the rest rooms, swam, sunned, tea danced the afternoon away. The dance ended with "Thank you" by ABBA. This book brought tears to my eyes when reflecting on a time of "innocence" for The Pines community and for myself as well. Highly recommended for the subject and for Bianchi's photographic style.

It is amazing. The only reason I gave It four star is that most photos were tiny. I wish they printed bigger. This is a project Completed before I was Born. What a time !!!

I was reminded of some very happy memories as I paged through this book. Having lived during this era and experiencing an anything goes lifestyle was a trip. Hate to sound corny but this is a trip down memory lane. Woof! We have been there and done that.

First, a complaint: the Kindle price is WAY TOO HIGH, compared to the hardcover prices.But, this is a very useful and interesting book, even to this non-Jew. I have become a more devout Christian and it's upsetting the family balance, and many of the attitudes and feelings she describes in this book are ones I'm dealing with too.I also found it interesting at a cultural level, and it has already helped me understand a little better my Jewish friends and co-workers.Well written, well organized, thorough. The author is almost too careful to keep her personal experiences out of the book; I would have liked a few more amusing and/or poignant stories, like the story about her aunt and the cookies.

After having read and absolutely loved Mrs. Jaffe's "Two Jews Can Still Be a Mixed Marriage" I was very excited to read this book. However, I found the explanations and solutions suggested in the book very one sided and not really taking into account the rest of the family's feelings. I was also very disappointed that the book did not address how to make peace with a family that consideres itself observant, or keeps kosher/Shabbat to an extent, when one decides to become more observant or keep kosher/Shabbat to a different extent. Overall, I found myself getting very angry with the book as I read it and eventually started to skim it, so much so that I had to put it down. In "Two Jews Can Still Be a Mixed Marriage," Mrs. Jaffe comes off as sensitive and has lots of innovative solutions from all sides of the problem. But in "What Do You Mean You Can't Eat In My Home" I feel that Mrs. Jaffe has lost her sensitivity, and forgets that Judaism also requires one not to embarrass anyone in public (which I feel many of her "solutions" tend to do). I do applaud Mrs. Jaffe for writing the book and attempting to take others feelings into account, which is more than any other Ba'al or Ba'alat Teshuvah I've ever met has done.

This one should spark plenty of debate and discussion and that makes it the IDEAL book for nearly any Jewish family. It is no secret that many Jews start out in one tradition of Judaism (Orthodox,for example) and then veer off to find themselves in either the Conservative or Reform camp -or somewhere in between. And even if a family remains Orthodox, there isn't just ONE right way to be Orthodox. Is it okay to eat meat before going to a party which will feature milk items - and, if so, how many hours ahead of time can you do so? That question is just one example of how very confusing the rules can be, leading to accusations and judgments, ramping up the tension level. Who needs that? I won't go so far as to say that this book will solve all problems that come along.No book can do that. Sometimes lines are drawn and STAY drawn. Traditions remain, some of them rigid and unbending. But this book definitely opens the door to more peaceful conversations and even some compromises, perhaps even some "new" traditions (one can hope). It also will evoke memories in readers who've experienced the types of issues that are explored here - from parents with very diffent viewpoints to relatives who were judgmental, etc. A gem of a book and a basic for everyone interested in Judaism, whether "new Jews" or "old Jews".

Great book

What a great book! The target audience is people (especially women) who have decided to become Torah-observant and have problems dealing with less observant relatives. Well, I'm pretty much the opposite: totally secular, and (as far as I know) I don't have any relatives or even friends who are as observant as Mrs. Jaffe. Nevertheless, I found this book fascinating! How come? It's a chance to look over the shoulder, as it were, of someone who has decided to follow this path. I have no desire to follow her, but reading about her experiences gave me new respect for those who do: this is obviously something which works for her, and it works well. Something that has puzzled (and worried me) is that the denominations which are thriving today are those whose doctrines and practices are furthest removed from the rationalist secular society: the Mormons are the fastest-growing Christian group, while the Episcopalians languish. And if present trends continue, in 50 years the predominant Jewish group will be of the Torah-observant. Mrs. Jaffe's book gives a hint about why. Now if only we had a similar book from the LDS...

Good book for Baalei T'shuva to help in explaining new concepts to parents, family and friends. After I read it, I gave it to my parents. Not sure what they thought but I found it personally helpful. Easy read.

This is an important read for both the religious and non-religous. It clearly explains many of the common issues that can come up between family members. She emphasizes being respectful and keeping ones connections with family close and open. A really important read!!!

I bought this book for a synagogue library thinking it would help some of the older members deal with children who have become more observant. This perspective isn't addressed, it is solely from the viewpoint of young people having to explain things to their less religious elders. It would be more helpful if it gave practical advice to those who are less religious. I will probably return it.

Bought it for my daughter to use in 8th grade band. Haven't heard anything negative and it is what the teacher required so must be good.

I use these books to warm up community band that I conduct nearly every rehearsal. The exercises prepare each musician comprehensively... and they are structured in such a way that no section is left bored while others focus on specific skills.The chorales in this book are BEAUTIFUL, and I really enjoy that the warm-ups go beyond the standard flat "band keys". All-together an indespensible book.

I have used the warm ups, chorales, and scale studies with my advanced students and with my beginners as well. This book came to my attention when I visited the middle school band director of one of my clarinet students. It was obvious that the students in this band program were a step ahead of the rest. The warm-ups have a lot to do with this.Intonation, breathing and articulation are immediately addressed by using these exercises. I even purchased a trombone copy for my son and a flute copy for my daughter so we could play together at home. 5 stars for sure!
