This book is great for a beginner in studying the Samarian culture but is too limited for an in depth student. For the beginner though it is a great start for a study of one city of the Samarian culture. I am writing a novel set in UR & there were points in this book that will help me. Combining this book with other refrences I should be able to write a book about this early civilization that can bring people attention to the many advances in science & culture by this great civilization- divisions of time we still use today, the wheel, batteries, writing, math, etc. Good book.

I have been asked by Captivating History to read and review their books pre- release. Just so you know.Now. All that aside, I am well read on Ur - the history of the city, and the history of the archaeology of the ancient city and the region. This is the most complete history I have read which is written for the inquisitive non-scholar. Like I said, I am well read on the city, but this book tied together many strands which I previously missed likely mostly because the subject seems to bore many writers.This Captivating History ties together those strands. It also gives a responsible and plausible explanation of the Patriarch Abraham's connection with Ur. That last rarely, if ever, appears in the literature. Here it shows the breadth of this book.I'm glad I found Captivating History and, reviewing or not, I look forward to more books by them.
The book examines the history of the ancient city of Ur which may (and may not) have been the city that the Biblical Abraham is connected with. It's a city that had a long history under a variety of different controlling interests, being abandoned around 500 BC. Archaeological work began in the early 1800's.There was an early form of writing there which eventually evolved in the cuneiform writing which has told us much about various early civilizations. It's eventual downfall was caused by a variety of factors including climate change in the area which led to a drought along with various military conquests of the city.The book also includes a bibliography, photos and notes on the photos.Outside of the possible Biblical reference, though, the book doesn't really establish much of any reason for the reader to really care about the city and what went on there.
This book is not an in-depth, comprehensive examination of the archaeology and history of the city of Ur. Rather, it's an introduction to the topic, and taken in that light, a very good one. You'll get info on the general timelines, the various civilizations that vied for this bit of property, and even a touch of the mythology. That said, this is a book on archaeology. If you're looking for a Biblical reference, this isn't for you... or maybe it IS.
I am growing to love the Captivating History Series, they do a good job of telling about History without being dry, and this book is no exception. I learned a lot about UR and it's place in early history.
I didn't know about the UR.
When I saw Ur I knew it would contain information on Abraham & it did even if at end of book! The author notes some discrepancies on Biblical characters not mentioned in the records. Same as for the Egyptians ; the timelines don’t match up but rest assured it happened.I love the way arachaeology ties in with history. It was noted how the area lay undistrubed for centuries which made it ripe for picking by archaeologists to learn more about this culture. The Euphrates changed course which forced a move for the people. All kind of things happened which parallels cultures throughout history.Outstanding information about a little known culture getting its right place in the historical record!
