This is the 4th copy I've purchased. A great gift for a Rune worker new or advanced.
I'm still working my way through it and it will take quite a while to do that, but I love it so far. Very useful.
Love the book and had great service getting it here
Since twenty of more years I use this book as a kind of encyclopedia. As an old student of mr. Tony willis, I recommend this as an important book for the serious Rune-student.
Great
Meh. I dont know, this was very convoluted.
The Runic Workbook focuses on the magical and divinational sides of the Runes with an interesting Celtic coloring: each Rune is connected with a person in the Arthurian Cycle. The author’s primary influences lean towards the New Age and Western Occult perspectives with a sprinkling of Kabbalistic symbolism thrown in. He does use Blum’s Blank Rune (29) as well as reversed Runes (31) in his readings. The way Willis sets up his book is interesting in that he places a specific emphasis on one topic and discussed it over a range of Runes. For instance, he mentions five different topics and talks about them with three or more Runes each: general introduction, proportions, gemstones, flowers, and numerology. After his introduction and correspondence sections Willis talks about the magical uses of the Runes, specifically Bindrunes and Runic Scripts. It’s not in-depth by any means, and as for working with the Runescripts you’ll have to wait until after reading his Bindrune chapter to understand. There are a few questionable things to note in Willis’s correspondence sections. One example is Isa being connected to Jupiter. His argument states, “ice too, had the qualities of protection and preservation†(74). While Jupiter does have a few preserving qualities this is not something he is known for, as Jupiter is a planet of expansion, increase, growth, pushing boundaries, and so on. While I tend to avoid associating planets with the Runes, I think Saturn would be a better fit for Isa, which, strangely enough, Willis assigns to Naudiz, a fiery/friction like energy.Out of all the authors I’ve read Willis gives the most astrological flavor to his Runic writings. He even goes so far as to claim two energetic aspects to the planets: passive and active. Passive being that which we are likely to receive from outside sources while active is what we project.I do not suggest you buy this book because there are plenty of better ones out there: Nordic Runes by Mountfort, Illustrated Guide to the Runes by Pennick, Futhark by Thorsson, and Taking up the Runes by Paxson are all decent starting points. If by chance you do come across it in a used book store, a friend’s bookshelf, or the library though, I would say it’s worth a read.
There are some things about Tony Willis' book that I do appreciate. However, at times, this book seems to stretch the truth. The best thing about this book is that Tony Willis touches on many different interpretations of the runes and his definitions of a number of runic combinations that he finds significant. The worst part about this book is that when I say that he "touches upon" them, I mean that the more universal meaning of each rune is summed up by a single sentence, following pages of mundane descriptions. He attempts to analyze the runes in terms of astrological signs and Greek and Roman mythology, which is a decent approach given that Willis' background seems to be in Astrology, but unfortunately, he spends too much time trying to fit the runes into astrological categories, even when they don't really fit. For someone more well-versed in Astrology than me, this could be a meaningful way of learning the runes, but according to the simple descriptions that Willis gives, he seems to be forcing the connection. There are much better rune books out there, most especially Diana Paxson's book "Taking up the Runes" and Edred Thorsson's "Futhark", but for someone looking to get a more "new age" perspective on the runes, I've seen far worse than this one.
