About the Author
Stephen M. Tomecek (a.k.a. "The Dirtmeister®") is the Executive Director and founder of Science Plus, Inc. Steve began his professional career as a geologist (yes, he's a real scientist!). The title "Dirtmeister" was hung on him over 20 years ago by his students at the New York Botanical Gardens where he taught courses in soil science. He served as the Associate Director for the Science Museum of Long Island and as the Science Program Supervisor for the New York Hall of Science. He currently serves as a writer and science consultant for the National Geographic Society, Scholastic, Inc, and Chelsea House. In the past he has written and has helped to develop web sites for Discovery Communications, the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, and Los Alamos Labs. Steve has written over 45 nonfiction books for both teachers and kids.

I've long been a fan of National Geographic books for kids and this book is another wonderful example of why that is the case. Steve Tomecek (aka The Dirtmeister) takes readers on a wonderfully informative journey through the science of our planet. Starting with the science of the earth's development, he also covers facts about earthquakes, volcanoes, soil, rocks, weathering and erosion. Each section starts with a fun little comic followed by several pages of description, graphics, and photographs discussing each topic. The design is fresh and appealing and the information fascinating. The inclusion of various experiments demonstrating some of the different processes that are presented is an awesome touch. These could be done at home or by a teacher in a classroom to help students understand the different processes. I loved the book and plan to recommend it to young geology lovers and teachers alike.
I've given this book 5 Stars as I'm pleased with it....that being said, the child I purchased it for is not quite at the reading level required yet. I'm sure the 7 year old and this 75 year old will enjoy it together and it'll be a keeper for him. It's a Christmas gift so he hasn't explored the fun & colorful pages as of this time.
My six year old son loves this book. I love this book. There is a ton of information amidst the great photos and illustrations. You can easily read two pages and gather lots of succinct info; I find that material not in story form can get boring for this age group, two pages gives a lot without getting boring.Absolutely recommend. This would be a great gift with one of rose crystal mining kits.
My 8 and 5 year old really enjoyed this book. Love that it teaches them about our earth, all the while making them laugh at the dirtmrister and his fun antics.
My grandson, Finn, loved it! He's planning on being a Paleontologist some day (We'll see!!), and all books on dinosaurs, dirt, rocks, fossils, etc., etc. fill him with joy!!! A good investment, for sure! (He's a 7-year-old.)Alice Neely
