This book has many of the elements that make the Nancy Drew series great. There are mansions, mystery staircases, international intrigue, and more. In this book Nancy finds herself flying to France searching for a mystery staircase which may be related to one of her father's cases. Amid balls and chateaus Nancy unravels a mystery. The ending will likely seem wholly unbelievable to the older reader, but it captivated me when I was younger, and the book is a good read. I've found that this book has stood the test of time better than some other Nancy Drew books.
On a lark, I reread this as a 63 year-old because it was such a favorite when I was about 8 or 9. I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed this re-read. Of course this is not "good" literature and like all the Nancy Drew books I read as a child is formulaic. Unfortunately, I don't think my daughter would want her daughter reading these books, simply because they are not "good" literature. However, I couldn't believe how exciting it was today as it was back then. I couldn't put it down. I liked the simplicity and yet the plot at the same time. It sparkled for me and not just from bringing back memories of childhood. Of course, it's a quick read. I don't think there is anything wrong with getting a reluctant reader to get hooked on these. Nancy Drew hooked me on reading more than any other books and I can imagine younger girls today might want to devour them as I did back in the early 60's.
I bought this for my 7 year old second grader, who loves Nancy Drew mysteries. The vocabulary is excellent, & it is a quick read. There is no objectionable language and it is chaste enough for young children. Additionally, Nancy Drew doesn't behave disrespectfully to her parents, use incorrect grammar, or throw her friends under the bus like Junie B. Jones, another fictional titled character that was causing some stress between my daughter and me.My daughter's reading level has improved immeasurably since beginning these Nancy Drew books & her love of reading has escalated as every chapter ends with a minor cliffhanger. She used to complain about her school mandated 20 daily minutes of reading, but now wants to sit down together and solve these mysteries. Thank you, Carolyn Keene!
I grew up on the original series of books that had belonged to my own mother in the 30s and 40s. I had no idea they had tweaked the books in the late 50s to make Nancy more demure and deferential to men. Glad they are bringing back the original editions/printing! My great niece <3 reads them amazingly well for a 1st grader and discusses the stories in depth! I send her one, in their order, every other month. I want her to have the entire collection as I did and as her great grandmother did. So thankful for this revival of the original printing.
My mother got me hooked on Nancy Drew when I was in my teens. We used to have the hard back books, but I have no idea what happened to them, so I decided to start over again with the 1st book on my Kindle. I read it from start to finish last night. I haven't done that since I was 17! Granted, these books are nothing like today's books, but hey, that's why I like them! ;-) Nancy Drew has an innocence about her that is a breath of fresh air. She is adventurous, friendly, and caring. All of the characteristics I look for in a best friend. She has a heart of gold and she has the best of intentions. I look forward to reading book number 2 again and reliving my youth!
I never read the Nancy Drew series when I was young. So, I discovered this series via HER computer games. I decided to read the books. These books were written in the 1930's. Writing styles have changed since then. There is no profanity, sex, or gore. So, I guess "modern" readers would find them drab and boring. I, however, am enjoying them very much. It also gives me a glimpse in a by-gone age where people cleaned up for dinner. Ate dinner as a family and exchanged one's thoughts and problems. The mystery aspect is pretty good. These books were written for young readers, so some of the plots may seem pretty tame or even lame by today's standards. These books are no match for Agatha Christie, of course. All in all, this 69 year old is enjoying reading how our young sleuth solves mysteries. If you're tired of the "modern" fare, sit down and enjoy one of these quick reads.
I have a copy of the book from 1930 and there is not a whole lot of resemblance between the story in my book and your version. Frankly, I like my book version a lot better than the one you sold me. Relationships are changed, names are somewhat different, and the story in my book is far more exciting than yours. Your version, it seems to me, is someone writing down what they remember of the story.
I received the original print (blue book/orange writing), instead of the pictured second print (blue book/black writing), but I am extremely happy with it. I have started to collect the *original* ND books, and I am trying to collect all of the original prints. Book arrived in three days--well before the estimated delivery date. Would definitely recommend this seller!
