Great read. I’m a college student majoring in information science and big data is the hottest topic in the field. I didn’t know much about it, I knew what it was but this book really takes you in depth on how it works, how it’s created, and how companies used big data to make them the giants they are today like Netflix, Zillow and Yelp. Walkers approach on telling us what a data scientist looks like in terms of skills and how a data scientist can go from good to great is very informative and inspiring. Great read for anybody with insterest in the field.
This book explains the definition and power of Big Data by providing numerous examples that, as a consumer, we an relate to - Netflix to LinkedIn to Nest. I am responsible for an IoT platform in a B2B environment and this book provided many great monetization strategies. What amazed me the most is how thoughtful the author was to make these solid concepts actionable (SIGMA framework) for people like me.I highly recommend this book esp. some on in product management role!
What sets Walker’s book apart from the pack is his attention to what makes a difference to a firm… making money! He offers many real examples of how to shift from the tactical use of data to creating new revenue streams. Walker introduces the concept of data monetization early in the book. He does not suggest that this is a new concept. But, he indeed suggests that the opportunity is now. Walker addresses data monetization with a discipline and commitment to business strategy and analytics. I especially like that Walker does not discount the importance of putting the right business models in place to ensure that firms do not fall short of realizing profits from big data. He tackles the tough stuff with enough examples that the message comes across loud and clear. Now is the time to profit from big data. I like this book, a lot. And, highly recommend it.
Professor's Walker's latest work stands apart from other Big Data books as he takes the perspective of how to monetize big data and uses real world examples of companies that have leveraged analytic capabilities to monetize their data assets. His SIGMA framework is an excellent approach to assessing a firm's data strategy, identifying gaps and opportunities. It's a terrific read from a world class thought leader in analytics. Russell's expertise in the academic and practical aspects of the value of implementing analytic strategies is evident throughout this book.
Great book, not just for business leaders who may not be very familiar with data strategies, but also for data scientists. Provides lots of great examples of leveraging data in various businesses/industries. The Sigma Framework gives a good framework for analyzing your (and other) business's data strategy.
Prof. Walker as a Ph.D. statistician and researcher on business analytics has a unique experience to see both sides of the coin (technical and business), he understands what can be achieved by any organization during a specific time period and what kinds of things non-technical audience needs to be exposed for better decision making.His book ‘From Big Data to Big Profits: Success with Data and Analytics’, is definitely a must read for a person with even a little bit of exposure to data science, the elaborated examples explains how leading firms have integrated advanced analytics and big data at various levels of operations and how it has helped them gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
Excellent read. Prof. Walker does a great job at bringing abstract data strategy concepts to earth through engaging, real-world case studies. At the end of this book, you will have a great understanding of what's truly behind the hype of buzzwords such as "Big Data", "Internet of Things", and "Industrial Internet". More importantly, you'll get a bunch of great ideas on how to add more value to your organization.
This book does a great job of demonstrating how companies are using big data to improve their products, processes, and bottom lines. It then goes beyond that and lays out how analytics/data science teams are structured and function within organizations and provides a framework by which they can be judged. I read this as part of an Analytical Leadership class at Northwestern's Masters of Science in Analytics program. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the value of data science.
