From School Library Journal
Gr 3–8—While general Jewish holiday cookbooks for children are relatively easy to find, Let My Children Cook! fills a kid-friendly Passover cooking niche that has been neglected since the original publication of Tabs and Steinberg's Matzah Meals by Kar-Ben in 1985 (reissued in 2004). With over 80 recipes ranging from the very easy Dried Fruit Kabobs to more complicated soups and baked chicken, Ansh offers plenty of ideas to help families make it through the Passover holiday without resorting to Matzah Pizza every night (though there is a recipe for it on page 24). Colorful illustrations of safety tips accompany each spread. The cookbook appears to target traditional Ashkenazic Jewish families, as no mention of the origin of the holiday is made and all spellings reflect Ashkenazi pronunciation ("charoses," "bas mitzvah"). In addition, some ingredients, such as a frozen gefilte fish roll, may be difficult to find in communities without a large Kosher grocery. Each recipe notes whether it is meat, dairy, or pareve and gives a suggested number of servings. The introduction states that gluten-free recipes are noted; however, only three recipes are marked "GF," while a number of recipes contain no gluten (most of the fruit desserts, the salads, etc.) and should be marked as such for the ease of cooks flipping through the recipes. Another organizational weakness is the lack of an index in a cookbook containing so many recipes with a great variety of ingredients. A few Passover art projects tacked onto the end seem to be an afterthought. In spite of these shortcomings, this cookbook should earn a spot in Judaic collections and the libraries of Jewish day schools.—Martha Link Yesowitch, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, NC

Let My Children Cook is a kid friendly books that is well organized. It starts out with 2 pages of safety tips. The table of contents is easy to follow. The food categories are in an oversized font that is a different color from the recipes. Each section of the book has its own color coded fonts. The recipes range from simple snacks that require minimal preparation and no cooking to complex foods that requires multiple steps and some experience in the kitchen. It would have been helpful to designate a level of difficulty on each recipe. The selection is geared toward a youthful audience who would like to spend time in the kitchen during Passover. Adults will find many recipes enticing. Although I did not have time to test out any of the recipes, the directions appear to be easy to follow. Many of the foods can be eaten year-round. The book also includes a handful of craft projects.
The subtitle notes that this book is for kids. I think this is a great cookbook for all ages (unless you prefer those recipes with millions of steps and ingredients that take all day to prepare.)Simple, healthy, yummy recipes suitable for Passover and all year long. Salads, soups, smoothies and more. I made the salmon latkes with panko (instead of the listed matzo meal) since it is not Passover and had great results. The illustrations are adorable and make using the recipes fun. Can't wait to try some more of the recipes.
Great cook book for kids! Easy to make recipes for adults too.
gave as holiday gift to one set of grandchildren, their mother loved the idea and recipes.
Although written for children aged eight to fifteen with delightful hilarious drawings, men and women of all ages can profit from this book and enjoy reading it. The book contains over eighty delicious and easy to make recipes as well as two pages of safety tips. Among eighteen safety tips that everyone who cooks should know, and children need to learn, is “put your pot of cooking food on the back burner and turn the pot handles toward the back.†The book has clever fun symbols for every recipe indicating whether the food is meat, dairy, pareve, and the number of servings. It has many clever introductory statements. It is a splendid way to gain children’s interest and introduce them to the joy of cooking. The book is divided into a dozen categories including: very important recipes for Passover, fun finger foods, munch and brunch, soups, fish, meats, chicken, veggies, deserts, and fun arts & crafts. Some of the many recipes are turkey shishkabobs, dried fruit kabobs, matzah brie, scrambled eggs, blueberry pancakes, stuffed matzah balls, meatloaf, milkshakes, and morocco-style gefilta fish. In her four page fun arts& craft section she has four projects, including making Passover aprons and placemats. One can easily imagine that kids will spend many enjoyable hours as a result of this book.
I had heard that this was a cute new cookbook, but it really is the perfect new Pesach book! Though it's billed for children - and its whimsical, friendly cartoons and easy-to-follow instructions make it perfect for a beginning reader - it's also perfect for any other cook in the family! The recipes are simple both in ingredient count and directions, but the wide variety of recipes guarantee that everyone can find something to make.I like that the introduction hits all the important safety pointers but is only two pages long, and I love, love, love the arts and crafts projects at the end. What a great way to entice a reluctant pre or pre-pre teen into the kitchen!Tamar Ansch really has done it again!
I was only able to browse through this cookbook for a quick minute after it came in the mail this week before my children took it from my hands and started asking when we could start cooking. Bright, colorful, with cute icons and lots of cartoon drawings, the recipes pages are easy enough for kids to make with minimal help from an adult, and the instructions are written simply enough for kids to follow. Also, its printed on shiny, durable paper that looks like it won't tear easily. All the basics are here, like chicken soup, seder needs like charoset, and a variety of kid friendly recipes that aren't the same old tired Pesach regulars. My kids especially want to make the Marshmallow Ice Cream. This is the first kid-focused Pesach cookbook and I'm happy to be adding this one to my collection!
We received this book and I let my kids loose in the pre-Passover test kitchen. My 8 and 11 year-old made several recipes under the supervision of their teenage siblings with great results. The recipes are kid friendly with easy to follow instructions and tasty results. Strawberry Snow (a simple strawbery sorbet recipe) and Crunchy Chicken Strips will be appearing at my house during the week of Passover. For younger children, adult supervision is definitely necessary, but a number of the recipes can be made alone or with minimal supervision by older tweens. All around good food and good fun.
