Mariah Marsden did a fine job of converting L. M. Montgomery's book into graphic novel format, but it's the illustrations by Brenna Thummler that capture the magical essence of Anne, and her beautifully-rendered world of Avonlea. From the first moment you meet Thummler's precocious Anne, waiting at the train station, you fall in love with her all over again. You know right away there's a hidden beauty to this child - freckles, red hair, and all - even the way her nose is drawn brilliantly conveys Anne's self-deprecating awkwardness. What I especially like about this book is the way Thummler portrays the emotions and personality of each character; the story could almost be told with no words at all. In fact, there are many places where no words are employed, and the reader is able to get a deeper sense of who Marilla, Matthew, Mrs. Lynde, Diana, Gilbert, and of course Anne, really are. Then there is Avonlea itself; Thummler again hits the mark. Simply put, she allows us the opportunity to see the world through Anne's eyes, and I can think of no better way to see the world. In this sense, Anne of Green Gables: A Graphic Novel should be required reading.
Background: we suspect my 9-year-old daughter may have dyslexia. Reading has always been a struggle for her, and she doesn't generally want to read children's books anymore but is daunted by traditional chapter books. Graphic novels are her favorite right now, and I was so excited to find this graphic novel version of one of my favorite books. My daughter loves it, and I am so happy to be able to share this timeless story with her in a format that she can appreciate. The text is abbreviated, of course, but true to the original. I didn't love every aspect of the illustrations but overall they are very well done and some are truly lovely. Definitely worth a read, especially if you have a struggling reader like mine.
This new rendition of the classic book is entertaining and beautiful. As an avid fan of the original series, I find the art brings a new layer of life and personality to the story. While the adapted writing leaves off many of the smaller scenes the art makes up for the lack of depth. In addition, the writing includes many of the best quotes to thrill both those who have read the original book many times and those who are being introduced to Anne for the first time. The simple layouts and straightforward dialogue make this an engaging book that even an elementary child could enjoy. Although it can never substitute Montgomery's work, this novel is a gorgeous addition to her legacy.
I normally will have nothing to do with adaptations of classics. Why alter the real thing? But this graphic adaptation of Anne of Green Gables is exceptional. It is beautifully done. My daughter and I took turns reading this to one another. I didn’t want it to end but was looking forward to the next one. Thoroughly disappointed to discover there is not any other Anne book or any other graphic novel at all done by this duo (Mariah Marsden and Brenna Thummer). I cried a little.
Update:I enjoyed the book and I was surprised at the ending. This book is not the entire story, so I’ve heard. But it’s entertaining.Previous review:I just purchased Anne of Green Gables: A Graphic Novel. I love the graphics and I'm sure I will love the story, judging by the reviews. I have never read the book, nor watched it on Television. I know this is not helpful, but I am kind of excited about the book and I can't wait to read it. However, due to Thanksgiving tomorrow, I have to make preparations. So I will save this, and update it as soon as I can. My overall rating is four stars for now. Thank you.
Splendid art and stayed true to the original text. I like to use graphic novels to introduce classics to my youngest readers. This did just the trick! My nine year old boy loved it and begged for the original (and then asked if we could watch the old tv series together). I couldn’t be more pleased.
As far as the item I received, it was excellent.Being a nearly lifelong Anne of Green Gables fan, it was good. I enjoyed it for what it was. As in, you can’t get the whole novel into graphic form. I thought it was well adapted. Must have for any Anne fan.
this was a a most interesting graphic novel , the imagery is interesting and true to the story. I thought it was great and a wonderful way to get reluctant readers introduced to a classic ,wonderful story
