From School Library Journal
PreS-K—Employing a rainbow of tones, a young girl tries to help her multihued friend understand why he is "feeling all mixed up." The unnamed child distinguishes five emotions (happiness, anger, sadness, fear, and calm) and articulates what each one might feel like by equating it with a color. A smiling golden monster on a spread featuring yellow leaves and cutouts represents happiness, describing it as "yellow like the sun." The text explains, "When you're happy you laugh, jump, dance and play. You want to share that feeling with everyone." Conversely, when blue, "you're sad you might want to cry or be alone." Most dramatically, a red monster jumps off the page and declares, "When you're angry, you want to stomp and roar and shout, 'It's not fair!'" Emotions are described in age-appropriate terms, and although calm is a bit tricky ("you breathe slowing and deeply. You feel at peace."), there's no question what the fellow bathed in green is feeling as he rests in a hammock, eyes closed with a smile on his face. A final emotion is left unnamed for readers or listeners to identify, but pink hearts give it away. A number of books, such as Molly Bang's When Sophie Gets Angry—Really, Really Angry (Scholastic, 2004), explore how a child deals with a particular emotion; Color Monster considers the range of feelings a child can experience. As with most pop-ups, durability is a question. VERDICT Less a story than a vehicle to initiate a reassuring conversation about emotions and how to identify them.—Daryl Grabarek, School Library Journal

What a beautiful book and fun book!. We r working on naming the emotions we r feeling with my four year old especially when he gets really frustrated and angry. Hoping this book will be a good tool to talk about it more. Beautiful construction, bright colors and seems pretty sturdy. My 20 mo says “wow wow†for each page. He’s made me read it three times in a row already. Sturdy enough he can pull and push on the flaps and no issue. Will have to be careful with this book but it is stunning and great content
This book is amazing! I love the illustrations and the story itself. The pop-up items are adorable and it's just an overall really fun book to read with the kids while teaching them about their emotions. It's like a coffee table book for children because of the art. Just keep it away from the very little ones as some of the pop-up features are fragile. Other than that, it's a great book and I would recommend it as a great choice for any child's library.
I work at a library, so I’m always super hesitant to buy books because I just check them out and support my system that way. But I have had this sitting in my cart for months because I have an outreach coming up at a daycare, and their theme is emotions. We didn’t have a ton of books that I loved on hand, but I found this book while browsing books to find at my library. Of course we didn’t have this book, way too fragile and my 3 year olds would tear it apart, but that’s what makes it so perfect for story time! Only my hands are on it so all the little ones can enjoy the big, bold, beautiful pictures and colors. So happy to have this in my collection.
I cannot tell you how amazing this book is! I splurged and got it, even though it's more expensive. My four year old and one year old LOVE this book! They both really enjoy when this book is up for story time. My one year old doesn't sit very still for story time because it's not exciting enough, but since they pop-ups are so beautiful, he actually sits still to listen for this book. My four year old has ASD and so I was looking for a book that would help explain emotions, because he really struggles with processing them. I often refer to this book when he's upset and tell him "you're a mess and have your emotions all mixed up. If you'd like I can help you!" And it actually helps him start calming down because he wants to read it, so it serves as a great distraction/transition object.
The pop ups in this book are very unique which makes it engaging & appropriate for kids through early elementary school (and grade) for emotional education. The only con I have is that the book only represents 5 feelings: happy, sad, angry, fear, calm. Love is "shown" at the end. It's a good basic introduction. I would also suggest checking out In My Heart by Jo Witek! It has a larger range of emotions and they are beautifully described! I will enjoy having both books in my collection!
A short lovely story about emotions with gorgeous and clever pop-ups on every page! We're big pop-up fans in our house, and this one is one of my personal favorites. The scenes displayed are simple but SO cleverly done, with some interactive pages mixed in.Definitely recommend!
Feelings are difficult to express...even for adults. This book assigns colors to those feelings and is a really cool pop-up book. My five-year-old son actually requests the book. I've purchased other books by the author because they help spur crucial conversations.
This book is beautiful. The popups are pretty intricate! My three year old loved it. I also like that it is teaching her about feelings, not something I might have thought to get a book about. I actually did a search for popup books because she is really into them right now. I would not hesitate to buy this again and I might give it as a gift. There are not a lot of words, I would say it might be a bit too simple for 5 and up.
