Review

How do you tell the story of humanity as portrayed in the Bible and make it both riveting and relevant with fresh twists around every bend? Shane Wood has accomplished just that. Part autobiography, part theology, and part narrative of the story of every human being, we laugh, cry, agonize, and end with great hope as we see the story of creation, fall, redemption, and consummation with fresh eyes. A delight to read. --Craig L. Blomberg, Distinguished Professor of New Testament, Denver SeminaryBetween Two Trees is a contemplative and passionate work that explains in a scholarly yet accessible manner the personal transformation we can all have by knowing Christ Jesus. Shane Wood brilliantly challenges us to cling to hope, love, and life, even while we are in the middle of struggle, strife, and division. I highly recommend Between Two Trees as a guide for your spiritual journey. --Dave Ferguson, Lead Pastor, Community Christian Church, Naperville, IL, and author of Finding Your Way Back to God and Starting OverSimultaneously honest confession and wise counsel, Shane Wood's Between Two Trees invites us to contemplate life in terms of union and transformation. Anyone looking for new perspectives on old questions about faith and life, about sin and death and God, about being fully human, will be enriched by this book. It guides us toward living between the trees of creation and new creation in light of the tree in the middle: the cross of Jesus. --Michael J. Gorman, Raymond E. From the Inside Flap

The problem of Eden is much worse than you thought, but the solution is much better than you could have ever imagined. Between Two Trees reveals that the real tragedy of Eden is a union with death, a union that produces division and despair. Life isn't lived under Eden's tree of life or beneath the healing leaves of the tree in the New Jerusalem. It is lived between them. And between these two trees, life is hard. In spite of this tragedy, Between Two Trees will challenge you to embrace hope, love, and the beauty of reconciliation at the true tree of life: the cross of Calvary. By exploring the problem of Eden and the power of the cross, Shane Wood calls us to walk on a path to transformation, a path to union with God. The book's journey ends under the shade of the tree of life in the New Jerusalem with God's unfinished creation now complete. Yes, Eden, but more importantly, you. The unfinished creation in us.

Having finished the book I thought that everyone should know just how good this is.Shane Wood’s point, if I could say it concisely, is that the problem is worse than we thought, so the solution is also greater than we thought. If you’re like me, you’ll find yourself more joyful for what God is doing in your life and in the lives of everyone. As a pastor, I will be reading this book with many Christians in the years to come. For so few books are so easy to read but so rich with truth. Shane’s pastoral love is evident in his painstaking clarity. As the title suggests, Shane’s general outline follows the garden/tree imagery in scripture. Life in Eden, the cross, and heaven. He demonstrates from scripture that the story of salvation is a transition from death to life. We have been united with death and were designed in the garden to be united WITH (a word that had a whole chapter devoted to it) God.Shane is autobiographical in that he shows everyday examples that follow the redemption story. Everyday, but not small. Shane is very open in this book to the point where I found myself often thinking he was talking directly to me. It’s easy to trust him because he shows his deep pain and his deep healing all from God.The book itself is well bound, fairly short, highly affordable, and difficult to put down. I personally read it in two sittings, which is not something I can say about many books. Some highlights-The significance and depth of “what happened in the garden of Eden?” Is truly understood only and appreciated by answering the question “how did God respond to the fall?”“We know what sin is- just don’t make us say what it is. Which is odd, given Christianity’s core belief that Jesus died in the cross to save us from our sins.”“As Christians, we should confidently say with Paul, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ” (1 Cor. 11:1). Yet most of us shy away from this verse with apprehension. “What me? Follow me as I follow Christ? No- follow Jesus, not me. On the surface, this response sounds holy, but in reality it’s quite appalling. If people follow you and don’t end up at Christ, then where are you headed?”

Between Two Trees excels at digging deeper into the details of what sin's curse truly means: Does wrongdoing simply amount to a moral infraction--albeit one quite large--or, as Dr. Wood proposes, does it perhaps unify man's soul with something quite unlike God? The issue is far more pervasive than many today have been led to believe, but the beauty of the cross is therefore awe-inspiring beyond what we thought possible. The premise of Between Two Trees is encouraging, and the impact of its theological lens on the way believers should approach reality, itself--from time, wounds, and mistakes to the meaning of death and holiness--is worth looking into. Nevertheless, this book is not deeply concerned with proving or defending its points by presenting the exegesis that produced them. Therefore, as one reads on, the sinking suspicion only grows that any doubts he/she develops about the keystone definitions upon which this book's exhortations will require a follow-up publication to be satisfied. It is worth the ride of seeing how one of the greatest modern biblical scholars navigates life according to his biblical convictions--and allowing his journey to impact one's own heart. I, however, would have loved to see more of how Dr. Wood came to hold his theological views on the nature of sin, death, and their union with mankind. 4/5 stars for challenging and enriching my beliefs about the beauty of following Jesus.

Shane Wood is a very insightful, intelligent guy who has a love for the book of Revelation that is contagious. I have been enriched by his teaching, and look forward to reading this book!

Shane does an excellent job of explaining the meaning of “Living Between Two Trees.” Life begins in Genesis and ends in Revelation. He is passionate in his love and obedience to Christ. I highly recommend this book.

Shane has nailed this life between two trees! From our union to reunion with God the gift given to us through Shane’s insight is much needed and very much appreciated.

I am using my mother's Amazon account just to be able to leave a review on Shane's book. My name is Torrie though. I would highly recommend all people reading my review to buy a copy of Shane's incredible book. I grew up in church so many of the concepts that he discusses in the book are ones that I have heard my whole life. For example: "Adam and Eve ate the fruit and caused the fall." "Jesus died on the cross for your sins." Sometimes, when we hear a story often enough, we start to become numb to the story and miss what is actually occurring. Shane helps to renew that for us. He drives deep and digs under the surface to explain from a different angle truths that we all know of but need a reminder. He also brings up concepts that you may have never heard of but will indeed challenge you. I promise that you won't regret buying Shane's book. Buy this book and allow God to speak over you and make you into the man or woman that you were created to be. Allow God to challenge your faith in order to grow closer to Him. You will be blessed.

4 starsShane Wood has written a fantastic book delving into the book of Revelation, Genesis and Jesus' life. I really enjoyed this book and learned a great deal from it. I would recommend this book! I believe it would be great in a small group or bible study as well as for personal study. Woods writes in a way that is easy to read yet informative at the same time.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. The views given are my own. #BetweenTwoTrees #NetGalley
