Alan K. Rode has followed up his engaging biography of Charles McGraw with a stone brillant tome on Michael Curtiz, the Hungarian director of scores of Hollywood films, best known for giving the world a host of enduring memories: the look on Rick's face (Humphrey Bogart) when he sees that Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) is actually sitting in his gin joint; the passion behind the singing of La Marseillaise by the café crowd as they drown out a group of Nazis singing a martial song; Bogart and Claude Rains, as the local prefect, disappearing into the fog to signal "the beginning of a beautiful friendship." But as Rode reveals in this superb biography, there was much more to Curtiz than "Casablanca." A very complex man with many foibles to accompany his extraordinary skill as a director, to be sure. Rode also brings out the flavor of "old Hollywood" at the peak of its picquancy in this satisfyingly thick book. Mr. Rode (pronounced ROE-dee), one of the industry's key authorities on film noir and host of many noir festivals and events around the country every year, has delivered a meticulously researched, beautifully written tour de force that is very tough to put down...
A few weeks ago I was watching Turner Classics Movies. The network has been doing a showing of the great films of Michael Curtiz. During the introduction to one of the films I saw interviewed Alan K. Rode the author of this book. He was so fascinating and Curtiz seemed such an undiscovered gem of cinema that I had to buy this expensive well illustrated biography. I am glad I did! Michael Curtiz (he had several name changes before settling on this one! was born into the family of a poor Jewish bricklayer in Budapest Hungary in 1886. Curtiz studied acting and soon became involved in all aspects of film. He directed many films in his native Hungary later moving to Vienna and Berlin. He briefly served as a cavalry officer in the Hungarian Army during World War II. Curtiz caught the eye of Harry Warner on a European jaunt to discover new talent. Curtiz moved to Hollywood in 1926 where he directed over 180 films for the studio! His output far exceeds that of such legends as John Ford and Cecil B. DeMille. Curtiz won the Academy Award for Best Director in 1944 for the iconic Casablanca. Other great films include:Yankee Doodle Dandy with best actor Jimmy CagneyVirginia City, Dodge City, The Charge of the Light Brigade, Robin Hood and several other films with his swashbuckling discovery the Australian Errol Flynn. The two men did not get along but made wonderful films!Young Man with A Horn with Kirk DouglasMildred Pierce starring Joan Crawford who won Best Actress for her role.The Four Daughters series featuring the Lane sistersKing Creole with Elvis PresleyThe silent epic Noah's Ark Curtiz was noted for treating for not treating his actors well and making them work hard. He was sometimes accused of abusing animals used in his pictures but this was common practice among filmmakers in his day. Curtiz had a love hate relationship with Hal B. Wallis on the lot and got along fairly well with Jack Warner. His wife Bess was a screenwriter who helped his career. He had at least three illegitimate children in Europe and had countless affairs. Curtiz loved making movies, sex and polio! He mangled the English language. Most people have never heard of him but remember his great films such as White Christmas. He was expert at moving large crowds of extras and his cinematic eye was superb. Alan K. Rode has written a wonderful book filled with countless pictures and anecdotes about the colorful Hungarian artist. A book to savor and enjoy and learn about a great director and a golden era in American cinema.

Author Alan K Rode has done a marvelous job deciphering the life and career of Michael Curtiz, the wonderful director of movie hits such as Casablanca. Hungarian by birth, Curtiz seems like a peculiar choice for directing so many classic "American themed" pictures. An odd comment to some, I lose focus on Curtiz and look at the variety of his work over the '30's and the '40's. What's vertible tresure trove! This book picks up a glossy vibe in its description of classic Hollywood and melds its residents and the social era.
