Not the 3rd Edition. This copy has chapters out of order, missing chapters, chapters that are included in this one, but not in the real one, problems have different values in them making doing homework difficult. you name it, its wrong!There is a pdf available online for free if you just search the title, its the first or second link that pops up. Its nice to have a hard copy, but at least use the pdf to verify that what you are reading/doing for homework is correct.

This is a print for developing countries. My copy says it's not even legally aloud to be sold outside of Bangladesh. They put a sticker on the back of the book to cover over this message.The pages are printed in very low quality, some pages are blurry and hard to read. The paper feels very low quality. Some of the pages were folded and not cut evenly so when unfolded there was paper sticking out almost a cm past the rest of the pages.Awful quality. And no mention that it was not an original print.

Book arrived in perfect condition, but the presentation of information was just okay. To be fair, the subject matter is complex, however, I've had a multitude of other courses with highly complex subject matter where the text presented the material in a more coherent fashion. I won't be keeping this as a reference text.

School book

In addition to the third chapter, which is in the US edition only, the last four chapters a see also missing from this print. They appear on the Wiley website instead. I wish the seller would have mentioned about it.

Not as inclusive as I'd like. My brain thinks of many idioms that are not in this book. Also, I was looking up an archaic one this morning that was in the book, but the writer stopped at Shakespeare and completely missed the archaic significance of the idiom.

The Kindle version is completely useless. It cannot be set as a Kindle dictionary, so it is impossible to search it from within another book. Opening the "dictionary" as a book in its own right on the Kindle also does not seem to allow for internal searching. Therefore, to find anything in it, you would have to manually navigate to the entry, and, if you have an actual Kindle device, you would know how incredibly difficult, time-consuming, and frustrating that would be. I feel cheated.f

This book was exactly what I was looking for. I write historical fiction and when characters use idioms in their dialog, I want to make sure the idioms are appropriate to the time period. Lots of books tell you what the idiom means, but this one adds the approximate time the figure of speech came in to general usage. Also, the book is well designed, easy to use, and sturdy, too.

I have a friend that I can talk to for hours about idioms, so I got this as part of his birthday present. I was expecting sort of a fun fact book (yes I know itâ€™s labeled as a dictionary) and it really does present like a textbook. Itâ€™s fun to look things up but you canâ€™t just read it like a trivia book.

American Heritage put their resources behind this, lifting it above "just another idioms book"- good historical/etymological exposition- a real treat for word-lovers and those interested in insights into American character.

Of the three or four idioms dictionaries I own, I find this one by far the most reliable. The cross-referencing allows me to find an idiom more easily. If I look up "in fashion," I'm also told to check "in style" and to "see under GO OUT OF FASHION," which indicates the main listing. Each idiom is followed by one or more sentences which use the idiom appropriately. And a date of first usage is usually given. Here's an example:warm as toast Comfortably warm, as in "It was freezing outside, but we were warm as toast in front of the fire." Despite the British custom of serving toasted bread in a rack that rapidly cools it, this idiom originated in England, at first as "hot as toast" (c. 1430) and by the mid-1800s in its present form.

Surprising how much we use this when discussing old phrases for things. We may be old, but we can't usually remember what common sayings came from --- it's fun to find out.

I bought this book after reading The Restless Wave because I liked how it was written plus all the fascinating people he knew and met. So this book, Character is Destiny is thought-provoking and stimulating; so many, many fabulous people!!The stories are short enough to give the reader a good overview of the person. It caused me to continue to research many of them to know more, to look for more books about them.I highly recommend this book. It would have been one we would have read together as a family if I had obtained it years ago.It is a great book for homeschooling families. It would be excellent to use in conjunction with other curriculum that reinforces positive character traits.

These are wonderful glimpses into a number and variety of people who, in their own ways, have contributed to the well-being of the nations. Well written and certainly appropriate to these times, it gives one hope for the world.

About the Author

Although best known to the world as the lead guitarist of supergroup Queen, Brian May has a PhD in astrophysics and is an expert in 3D photography. He co-wrote Bang! The Complete History of the Universe with Chris Lintott and Patrick Moore, A Village Lost and Found with Elena Vidal and Diableries: Stereoscopic Adventures in Hell with Denis Pellerin and Paula Fleming. Astounding.Truly. Brian May is such a consummate guitarist. And as most of us fans who happen to be guitarists know, that with the help of his father, Brian designed and made a killer guitar. This book digs in and shows us how, and that is an amazing story of creativity, practicality, love, perfectionism, dedication, patience and freaking brilliance. In over 50 years, the truss rod has NEVER needed adjustment! What? And the frets? Never replaced!! Damn. If you're a guitarist, you know how unheard of that is. Plus, if you're not a guitarist, but you are a Queen fan...the book is a fantastic insight into Brian, as well. It touches on the relationship he had with his Dad, especially for the two years it took to make the guitar. Using hand tools and mostly parts that were lying around in Harold's shed in case they could be used for something someday, a priceless guitar was created. Brian's description of what it felt like to play on top of Buckingham Palace on the Queen's Jubilee Anniversary concert is worth the price alone. If you're a guitar geek like me, the fact that Brian let them take the Red Special APART in 2013 (except the tremolo block---wisely leaving that alone) to photograph all its insides...man, it sent ME into spasms of gear terror. Enough said. I find it hard to express how much I love this book, this story, this music, this guitar, this man. What a true genius.

May and his father knew nothing about guitar construction, but went ahead and built one anyway. The amount of forethought and planning they put into each step of the process just boggles the mind. The end result is one of the most iconic looking and sounding guitars in all of rock. If you're a guitar tech, builder or just a player who likes to put together project guitars from parts, this is a must read.

Brilliant insight into the "Red Special".Has one of the greatest quotes I've ever read. They were talking to one of Brian May's roadies asking him what it was like to be responsible for such an iconic guitar.His reply will stay with me forever:. "It's not like a Stradivarius, you can't just go buy another one".

As a guitar enthusiast, guitar player, and guitar builder, I've been anticipating reading this book for a while now.The guitar geek in me found this book to be a fascinating, illuminating read. I did not know the history behind May's guitar before reading this, and learning of this particular instrument's humble beginnings only makes its continued existence--and the sonic wonders that May has created with it--all the more astounding.As a longtime guitar noodler, I also got a thrill out of reading May's candid account of playing atop Buckingham Palace for Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee in 2002. That a musician as accomplished as Brian May can still be hampered by feelings of self-doubt and nervousness about his musicianship both humanizes this guitar hero, and provides some sense of comfort--and inspiration--to us less-than-impressive guitar players.The guitar builder in me was somewhat disappointed that the information presented in the book was more anecdotal than technical, as there exists a small but rabid enclave of guitar builders, obsessed over divining the exact specifications of the Red Special, and questing to recreate its magic. However, all of the close-up glamour shots of the guitar and its unique components largely make up for the lack of polished charts and CAD blueprints.In the end, it's an endearing, laid-back history of one of rock 'n' roll's iconic players, and the legendary instrument that defined his singular sound.

What an amazing book about Brian May's faithful lady companion the "Red Special" guitar that has been his faitful sidekick for almost 50 years.The book goes into great detail of how Brian and his father made the Red Special in their garage over almost 2 years when Brian was a teenager (16-18). They were so poor back then that Brian could not afford to buy even a used electric guitar and so his dad convinced him that they could make one out of things they found around the house.The body was made from an old oak table top, the neck from a more than 100 year old fireplace, the tremulo arm from a bicycle saddle bag holder and the end of the tremulo from one of Brian's mum's knitting needles (glad it wasn't fluorescent pink right?). The only things Brian purchased were the pick-ups and the frets and strings. He even made the mother of pearl inlays from buttons he found in his mum's sewing basket button box.If you've ever wondered what makes Queen and Brian May's "sound" so special - it's definitely Brian's love affair with his guitar. The Red Special is one of a kind... Brian describes it as his "voice".

Like many fans, I have been waiting for this book for some time. I can't think of any other guitarist that is so associated with ONE guitar. As of the time of this review I have not finished the book, but I couldn't wait to talk about it. The detail in the writing is excellent, but it's the pictures that make this a story. The Guitar Gearheads will love the tech info, but the average Queen fan who has seen and heard this guitar for decades will also enjoy this tale because of the presentation. The text and the pictures transport you to the guitars story.

I was hoping this book would be much more about the construction/building of the "red special" - but it's more of a 'life and times of Brian May' book - concert photos - an entire section of Brian's guitar collection (multiple copies of the Red Special by other companies, etc.) - which is all fine, but I was much more interested in the nuts and bolts. There is really only one chapter about the details of the guitar - it's fairly complete except for the ONE thing I really wanted to learn more about - the whammy system on Brian's guitar - was on-purpose given a once-over lightly... not dis-assembled or photographed in any detail. The caption under one of the few photos says " The tremolo sits deep within the guitar and was the ONE PART THAT WE DECIDED TO LEAVE ALONE in our explorations for this book..." Very disappointing.

As a Central American immigrant, this book absolutely resonates with me. It is amazing to see how much valuable information and anecdotes Jane shares with us.Itâ€™s clear that in third world countries, there are lots of talented and hard working men and women who have limited resources that need our help and support.I enjoyed learning about different options and purchasing power we have as consumers and ways to empower artisans .At the same time, as small business owner, this book makes me rethink the sourcing of my company â€˜s products . I have learned that there are more ethical ways to operate and to grow.

I interviewed Jane when she first launched her site and loved reading her back story on To The Market. Her dedication to designing and marketing products for the U.S. consumer while providing honest work for marginalized populations is beyond admirable. She is changing lives and preserving cultural heritage through her work. By sharing her story and the stories of her artisans I think she can help change consumer behavior. We CAN buy the change we want to see. I teach a college course in the Ethics and Sustainability in Global fashion and this book would be a great addition to the course curriculum. K. Webber

This was such a good book, so informative and really made me review my buying choices. I love the authorâ€™s focus on how something as simple as the coffee you drink can make another personâ€™s life better - and her anecdotes are both unusual and thoughtful. I am definitely buying this for some of my socially conscious friends - this is an amazing way of making change easily, and truly an inspiring read.

I not only enjoy reading these passages for myself, but also immediately obtained a copy for my 15-year old daughter. Really love Jane's story and the practicality of her message. It can feel so difficult to make a dent with problems that tough our hearts - but every person has the power to make impact with very simple daily decisions. I'll be sharing this book with friends! :)

About the Author

John Stuart Mill (1806-73) was educated by his father and through his influence obtained a clerkship at India House. He formed the Utilitarian Society which met to read and discuss essays, and in 1825 he edited Bentham’s Treatise upon Evidence. In 1826 he suffered an acute mental crisis and found that poetry helped him recover the will to live, particularly the work of Wordsworth. Having reconsidered his aims and those of the Benthamite school, he met Harriet Taylor and she inspired a great deal of his philosophy. They married in 1851. Utilitarianism was published in 1861 but before that Mill published his System of Logic (1843), Principles of Political Economy (1848) and On Liberty (1839). His other works include his classic Autobiography (1873). Mill retired in 1858 and became the independent MP for Westminster from 1865 to 1868. He spent the rest of his life in France and died in Avignon.Alan Ryan has served as a judge for the Film Fantasy Awards and is a member of the National Book Critics Circle. He regularly contributes to The Washington Post, USA Today, The Smithsonian, and Travel and Leisure, among other publications.

John Stuart Mills keeps it real spitting dope political rhetoric before it was mainstream. Pengiun classics are always well made so I just order them . Just higher quality binding and paper i suppose. This is a must read for anyone interested in free speeh, the harm principle, ethics...

The feminist movement should go back and read JSM because this work is truly relevant. Everyone should read about equality as it was understood and intended.
