About the Author

Rosemary Sutcliff (1920-1992) wrote dozens of books for young readers, including her award-winning Roman Britain trilogy, The Eagle of the Ninth, The Silver Branch, and The Lantern Bearers, which won the Carnegie Medal. The Eagle of the Ninth is now a major motion picture, The Eagle, directed by Kevin MacDonald and starring Channing Tatum. Born in Surrey, Sutcliff spent her childhood in Malta and on various other naval bases where her father was stationed. At a young age, she contracted Still's Disease, which confined her to a wheelchair for most of her life. Shortly before her death, she was named Commander of the British Empire (CBE) one of Britain's most prestigious honors. She died in West Sussex, England, in 1992.

Rosemary Sutcliff's classic, The Eagle of the Ninth, is an amazing tale set in 2nd century Britain during Rome's occupation. It is such a captivating tale, that we used it as part of our daughter's literature curriculum. Because it was written in 1954, the language is very rich and vivid. It helps the reader to imagine the sights and sounds and smells of early history. The story is compelling as you follow Marcus on his quest to find out what really happened to his father's legion and reclaim the honor. There are so many fascinating characters, such as Esca, Marcus's freed slave, and the Romans who chose Britain as their home. It is a beautifully written tale and well researched. Hadrian's Wall, the Roman fortresses, the wildness of Caledonia...all of it came alive in Sutcliff's story.

This is an attractive and solid hardcover, cloth over boards, edition of this book. Seems well bound and paper is of good quality.The story itself is an often recommended fictional history based on the Roman occupation of Britain, particularly a true mystery and an artifact unearthed in more recent excavation. The writing is descriptive and the plot interesting. It is probably above the level of most eight year olds in current society, but read aloud with some explanation it is still written well enough to hold the attention of that age group. Probably better individual reading for the typical thirteen and up reader.Through this story the reader can really see the misty, rainy region of Britain; feel the uncertain peace and ambiguous relationship between the Roman conquerors and the subdued (and not so subdued) tribes of Britain. The reader can understand both sides of the conflict and see into both societies. It is a great book to bring history alive. I particularly appreciate this author for her focus on British history that often is looked over.

I've always been partial to historical fiction with ancient settings, and have been particularly interested in Roman Britain ever since reading Anya Seton's The Mistletoe and the Sword several years ago. Although there is a plethora of fiction set in Roman Britain out there, I have avoided it all assuming that it would be filled with sex, profanity and violence. So when I recently heard about Rosemary Sutcliff's series of novels set in Roman Britain, and that they were written in the 1950s for young adults, I knew I had to give her a try.I was very pleased with The Eagle of the Ninth; so pleased, in fact, that I have ordered the next three books in the series. There are many elements of The Eagle that are indicative of the fact it was written for a young adult audience: the simplicity of the plot; the non-complexity of the characters and their interactions; the relative shortness of the book (200 pages); the focus on a young man and his friendships, as well as his quest to find out the truth behind his father's death and the disappearance of his Legion.But while The Eagle of the Ninth is focused on themes aimed at a younger audience, the author's style is one that will captivate readers of all ages. The focus and tone of the novel should appeal equally to men and women. Her descriptions are lovely and evocative and her language is sophisticated. I recommend keeping a dictionary at hand, as she uses many words and phrases that are unfamiliar to modern readers (or to this reader, anyway). While the meanings of most of them can be approximately determined from the context, if you're a word nerd like me you're probably going to want to look them up.The Eagle of the Ninth is a simple story that is well-written and pleasing. I, for one, am hooked and look forward to reading many more books by this author.

I've been a big fan of Rosemary Sutcliff since I first discovered her, with this book, more than 45 years ago. I bought this for my 13 year old great niece as a Christmas gift. I think Ms Sutcliff is unsurpassed as a writer of historical fiction--with substance--for kids.

When my youngest son was in grammar school, he really disliked reading. He had no patience for it. I made a list of books that I hoped would pique his interest, and I read a chapter each night until we finished several titles I had picked. One of those books was Rosemary Sutcliffe's "Eagle of the Ninth." Sure, he was old enough to read it on his own. But we both looked forward to each evening's chapter.Today, my 21-year-old son is an avid reader with a broad range of interests. These days, I take reading recommendations from HIM.I was very pleased to see that this historic novel has been reissued in a beautiful hardcover edition, complete with illustrations and an attached ribbon marker.The story is a straight-forward adventure involving young Roman officer Marcus, his slave Esca, and a wolf. It takes place in 2nd Century Britain and is based on a true story. This is the first in a series, and it was made into a movie starring Channing Tatum ("The Eagle").Sutcliffe did her homework and the novel makes the ancient world come alive.This book belongs on every child's shelf, and your son or daughter will be able to appreciate this particular edition for many years, long enough to pass on to the next generation.

I had high hopes when this movie came out because I've loved the book since I was a teenager. The movie tampered with the plot to the point where it was hardly recognizable. A couple of key characters were eliminated. Esca's character was changed. And the two main characters go off on their life-threatening mission without even having the plausible cover story they used in the book. This movie is a cartoonish butchering of a beloved classic.

Most instant pot recipe books I have seen so far are poor to mediocre. However, this one actually has some descent recipes that are tasty and donâ€™t call for bizarre ingredients

So many wonderful recipes are offered in this cookbook. Directions are easy to follow. We're Italian food fans so this is perfect for us. Have made a couple of recipes and they've both been delicious.

I just tried the Meatballs, Sun-Dried Tomatoes, and Argula and it was delicious! And in Instant Pot fashion super easy!! She gives many good tips on products to buy and how they make a difference. I'll be trying many more of these recipes!!

I love Italian and Mediterranean food, so I was excited to get this cookbook. However, although everything looks really delicious, the recipes seem somewhat time-consuming. For example, the salt cod mousse requires you to soak the salt cod for 48 hours. When I'm trying to plan dinner, I usually have about 1/48 of that time.But if you want to serve a fancy Italian dinner, this might be the perfect book for you.

Wonderful collection of recipes. Had no idea my Instant Pot was so versatile with Italian!

I was very disappointed that there was not a lasagna or spaghetti recipe in the book. Instead it focused on off-beat dishes. I personally think the book is a waste of money.

Easy to follow instructions. Amazing taste. What else do you need from a cookbook? How about glorious images and you can plate the food just like the pics. Really. I impress my family and guests every time I pull this book out. It's one of my favorite cookbooks.

I'm so glad I discovered this book because until I did, I was just so-so on my new Instant Pot. Unlike some other Instant Pot books I've checked out, Ivy's directions are clear and thorough. Great book, as a Christian who a) suffers from depression and b) uses secular buddhism to help my prayer life (meditation can help). First 2/3 of the book were excellent and purpose drive, the back third lacks drive and meanders and is more navel-gazey. Even with that lack of clarity in the back stretch, an excellent read and worth your time. I recommended it to two people and they both liked it as well.

Fantastic and helpful book. I would love to see a companion piece written about how to embody the practice of "Living with the Devil" because this symbolic way of relating to ourselves and "our demons" is very helpful. I would love to hear individuals relate these ideas to their 1) meditation practice 2) mode of living. I have some thoughts myself but I won't share them in a book review. Buy this book!No Mara, no buddha.

I have a lot of books on Buddhist and Taoist philosophy & beliefs. This is my favorite one. I read from it almost every morning. I bought a copy for my child as I think it contains more wisdom and guidance for living a good life than any other book I have found.

This is the fourth of Stephen Batchelor's books that I have read. Having gone from a fundamentalist version of Christianity to Buddhism, only to find myself a marginal Buddhist, his other books helped me with my agnosticism. But I remained a religious man who rejected religion. This book helped me with that.Having long thought of the myths of religion as metaphor, but often puzzled as to what the message is, this book offered clarity. I have been wandering the gaps without a name for it. Thank you Stephen.I have written too much of me perhaps for a book review but it is because this book spoke to me in a very helpful way. When a book speaks to you like this it is more than just a good read. We live with the devil, it's best to learn to minimize the damage.

I am a pastor and I like collecting Bibles of various translations this is one of my favorites.

As a teenage "Catholic", I was looking into the protestant faith because I didn't understand why the Roman teachings influenced the Catholic Church so much. I recently discovered that I have some Jewish Roots as both of my grandparents on my mothers side(which died while I was young) were Jewish and my mom was a convert to Catholicism which I never knew. I set out to read more about being Jewish and whatnot and discovered that it is a beautiful religion and even started talking to my parents about attending a synagogue. I then contacted a Orthodox Jewish synagogue and they explained to me that I was already Jewish and that I would just have to be circumcised and whatnot else. I had a bad feeling about going to a service and on that same day as I was doing some research I came across Messianic Judaism. It combined my belief in Yeshua and in Atonai. I proceeded to read about how it came to be and what it was and I discovered that it was a beautiful religion and so I began to search for an appropriate "messianic" bible to compare to my parents Catholic Bible(NRSVâ€“CE). I bought this bible for that purpose and the translation is beautiful and I like how it includes Hebrew names instead of the translated English names. It has helped me a lot on my path. UPDATED REVIEW/RATING:29 Aug 2017 - I've had this now for over 3 weeks, I am more and more disappointed with the Kindle version (understatement!). It can literally take at least a minute or more to find a specific verse of scripture. First you go to the "Contents" in the front (easy), then scroll over to the specific book you want, and tap it. That will take you to the very beginning of the book. In longer books with long chapters, you will literally be hand-scrolling, page by page, until you get to chapter and verse. That's just unacceptable for anyone wanting to use this as a reference. If all you want to do is read the author's outstanding information in the front, and then read the entire Old and New Testaments (Christian terms), this will be just fine. But to cross reference anything in this Kindle edition is functionally impossible - the effort required is simply unacceptable. I had given it a "gift" of 4-stars (content itself is definitely a 5-star rating), but after considerably more use, I'm probably still overly generous in downgrading it to a 3-star product. I'm almost tempted to attempt a full refund of the Kindle edition, except that I still want to have it available on my phone or Kindle device when it's not convenient to carry around a hard copy. I will definitely (and grudgingly) pay twice and purchase the hard copy of the book just so I can adequately use it when I've at least got access to the printed copy.===== Original review follows =====DARN! I wanted to be able to give this a better review. Content-wise, I love it - totally a 5-star item, particularly for the price. The fact that this is a single-translator's work is already a built-in acknowledgement by the author, so anyone knocking it down because of that I think would be unfair. If they simply disagree and can support that disagreement with substantial portions of translation, or with some doctrinal issue or other, so be it. I'm simply saying that yes, it would be nice to have more than just David Stern's view of things, but I'll certainly defer to his expertise over mine any day - not even close.The content is extremely helpful, and perhaps some background could help explain this review. I happen to be one who grew up in a Protestant denomination, kept going by choice for several years into my early 20s, but by about age 22 I'd simply not been able to reconcile several very fundamental questions and finally decided there is a God (though I did not understand his character - I've just always known that deep within even as a small child), but that the Bible was mythology just like Greek,Roman, or Norse mythology, and Jesus Christ was a great teacher and bold man, but when he died, he died as any other man does - and that he was not the Son of God. I sought out a religion that resonated with me, and could find none for several years. Only after several years and both highly unexpected and very powerful personal events did I come to know that I had been largely wrong. Each of the above suppositions on my part, starting around age 22, had been wrong. But the neat thing was, the questions I had have all been answered in greater detail than I ever expected possible. And it's been building now for over 40 years.Then late last year we became acquainted with a Messianic Jewish couple, and have had some marvelous discussions. In the process, I've come to identify with them and understand how they are not - in the usual sense of the word - "Christian." Oh, of course they believe that Jesus Christ was in fact the Messiah, but the differences with traditional Christianity (Protestant and Catholic) are amazingly similar to my own, even with no Jewish background on my part. Am I ready to begin attending a nearby Messianic Jewish service each Saturday? No. The specific denomination I accept is entirely satisfactory for reasons not appropriate for a review.So I came to order this item as a direct result of some YouTube videos produced by a Messianic Jewish Rabbi and his occasional reference to the "CJB." A little research finally explained what that was to which he was making passing reference. And I ordered it, to help better understand my own beliefs - and what a help it has already been in only a week!So why not a 5-star review (which my gut wants to give it)? Simple. Trying to navigate around in it to find "chapter and verse" completely eluded me for the first week. I JUST found out how (and it's not all that good) before completing this review. I finally found out how to find each of the books, but it's quite cumbersome having to scroll forward a page at a time to get to a specific verse. Chapter 47 verse 25 of some book? That's a heck of a lot of scrolling! I'd love it if someone could show me the "dumb" error of my ways, and provide an easier way, but for now, I'm stuck only being able to go to the first page of whatever book of scripture I choose to read or reference. To me, that's a major downfall, and my 4-star review is ONLY that high because of the exceptional explanatory and reference material prior to the actual scripture text. Trying to read this on my Android phone and do cross-referencing quickly is (so far) impossible with any kind of reasonable time. My KJV Bible? Piece of cake! This? Functionally useless for that purpose at least. It's a bit easier on the big desktop with a mouse, but still not easy. If the table of contents at least had chapter reference links under each of the book names, that would be far, far easier. For a study reference, I believe that's a major flaw.

My kids and I have been reading this Bible for several years and it is absolutely amazing! We read some scriptures in other versions as well but with most scriptures we prefer this one! We've learned some Hebrew from it and prefer to use the Hebrew names that are written in this Bible. We've also learned about the 7 Feasts of ADONAI from the back of this book and which scriptures to read on the Feasts and Sabbaths. This Bible is translated into English from a Hebrew perspective. It has some Hebrew words that are explained in the back of the book. If you want a deeper walk with Jesus Christ - Yeshua HaMashiach, I highly recommend this Bible to help you on your way! Our Savior is Hebrew! HalleluYAH! Praise YAH! â€

Regarding this version (as in the contents) of the Bible:This is an excellent Bible to own. The wording is more relaxed and natural when compared against the NKJ or other "old English" versions but it doesn't go to the extreme of paraphrasing like the Living Bible. (As a sidenote, I think that the Living Bible is a great introduction Bible for children or youth groups because of how simplified the concepts are. But you'd definitely want to upgrade to a Bible like the CJB for a more in-depth experience.) It's translated directly from the original languages instead of from another translation although some words and most names are not translated. A few examples: You'll read Yeshua instead of Jesus, Yochanan the Immerser instead of John the Baptist and Ruach Hakodesh instead of the Holy Spirit. Luckily there's an explanation at the beginning as to why this was intentionally done and a dictionary at the back to translate these terms.Regarding this printed book:This is a hardback "book" without any of the classic indentations or tabs which allows one to easily locate books. You can always purchase tabs independently. I have seen the CJB in other formats including the "classic" Bible look: black leatherish cover, soft backed instead of hard backed and the pages gradually indent to display the book abbreviations. The other formats are not sold on Amazon at the time of this review. I am not sure where to purchase it. Your local Christian bookstore should be able to order it.Regarding the Kindle version:I bought the Kindle version of this book. Unlike normal books that you read from start to finish, one usually jumps around in a Bible. Especially during religious services. It's very difficult to navigate to a specific verse in the Kindle version. I honestly don't recommend it because of that.
