Showing a lot of photos of gems and stones. Of the clear ones, probably half have a "window" (cut too shallow). No wonder the online jewelry sellers get away with selling that kind of junk...One book I've read said that windowed stones are almost worthless...granted, they show the color well, but it's a shame to have them in a gemstone book.Been collecting rocks, gems and minerals for many years, and have several versions of Schumann which I think is of greater value, with more information.

I started my library of gemology with this Pockets Gemstones and Smithsonian Handbooks published by DK. However as a pocket size book, I found it difficult if not impossible to read without good lighting and my bifocals. When I got the book, I was confused by its organization and disappointed in the amount of information. Its introduction covers mining, organics, and artificial or laboratory made gems. Curiously the text is arranged by color of gems rather than chemical properties. If I was going through a tray of unidentified loose stones, it may be helpful. It has a separate section for organics as pearls and amber. It has an appendix for chemical properties, which is helpful as most books on gemology are based on these properties rather than color. It has a glossary and an index. I mention the index as I had to resort to it in order to find entries for gems I was aware of but were not pictured. Curiously it also has appendices on legendary gems, jewelry care, and jewelry making.I taught science for 20 years on a secondary level and this book strikes me as being written on an 8th grade reading level.Perhaps that is its intended audience.

This is a very good book. I have been reading through some of it and I like the scientific aspect of this. I use this book in conjunction with The Crystal Bible and it gives a good overview of the gemological process as well as the Stones themselves. I DO wish that there was a more basic section of the type of crystals (Cubic, etc...) as I feel that section was particularly short. But that's nothing Google cannot fix...All in all, a very safe purchase

Any D.K. book is a good buy. I need information on dealing with jewelry from a realtive's estate. I couldn't have chosen a more useful book. It is well illustrated, and the information is the best. If you are looking for a book helpful in doing projects, especially of a scientific nature. Look in to D. K. books. They have great books to help children learn,

I fear that I am a bit of a magpie. I like shiny sparkly things, and the usual response is Ooooh! Shiny! And as a young one, when taken on various trips, I started to take an interest in rockhounding and geology. It was finding gemstones that were the real fun, seeing these little bits of glittery rock that turned out to be sapphires or amethysts or garnets. Life would take me in different directions, but the interest in pretty, glittery rocks has remained.Smithsonian Handbooks: Gemstones is one of those lovely little books that is crammed full of information and pictures, along some folklore and bits of trivia that add to the mystique of gemstones. Compiled by Cally Hall, it's a very readable book, filled with more than 800 photographs, with a text that while it is slanted towards scientific terms, is very readable and accessable.The first section of the book is an extended introduction to what makes a gemstone different than say, a mineral, although they might be composed of the same chemicals. A brief history of how gemstones and precious metals (silver, gold and platinum) have been shaped, worn and coveted. One section that I found very intesting was the explaination of the Mohs scale used to determined hardness -- it ranges from 1 to 10, with talc at the bottom, and diamond at the top, and how a stone is determined to fit in along the scale. Another fascinating section is how light and crystallization help to determine gemstones, and what part they play in how a stone is shaped and graded. There is also a section on synthetic gemstones and how they have been created over the centuries, and how the colour of stones can be changed by irradiation, heating and staining the stones. Finally, the section closes with a colour key, ranging various stones by their hues, with plenty of vivid pictures and the name of each stone underneath along with the page that goes into more detail about it.The next section deals with the gemstones and precious metals in particular. Each item is classified into Precious Metals, Cut Stones, and Organics -- and each item is given a page or two that goes into further detail. Stones are given their chemical composition, rating on the Mohs scale, crystal structure, some folklore and history, what sort of cuts that the stones are usually shaped into, and lots of photographs.It here in the photographs that the book sells itself. They are unusually clear, and crisply printed, with each gemstone being shown in a variety of ways. There is jewelry, different colours that the stone can occur in, and a few shown in their 'matrix' or the surrounding stone and minerals that the gemstones are usually found in their natural state. One of the more intriguing sections is on what are known as Organic Gemstones -- stones that are created by natural, not chemical, occurances, such as pearls, jet, coral, ivory, shell and amber.The final sections include a table of properties, glossary, index, and some useful addresses to contact if you find that you want to find out more.The binding is very sturdy, the printing very clean and crisp with the design well-thought out that flows easily from page to page. It is designed to stand up to quite a bit of use, with a spine that will not crack, and heavier than usual paper stock, and the quality is top notch.Packed into less than a 160 pages, this is a wonderfully priced little book that gives a quick, informative and lively look at gemstones. While it's certainly not a perfect book, and is mostly designed to help the reader figure out what a stone may or may not be -- only a trained gemologist can tell you what it really is -- it's a fun way to start learning. The price was extremely reasonable, less than 10$US, although the cover price is listed as 20$US. It would make a perfect book for adding to a home library, or as a gift to the budding rockhound in your family.Five solid stars. Recommended.

I bought this for my nephew and he can't put it down! He loves gemstones and things! We love how the book shows the rough gem and then the polished gem.

This is a truly worthwhile reference for gem lovers. Excellent photographs and enough technical detail for the amateur gemologist. Even if you do not collect gemstones this book will satisfy you.

Purchased this on a whim for my 10 year old sons Easter basket. The price was quite low and I thought he might be intrigued by it. In reality, he is mesmerized by the content of this little pocket book and loves to spout of the facts he has read inside. As our lifestyle takes us to many locations overseas, he is currently plotting where and how he will look for these various gemstones along our journeys. Very content with this purchase.

What can I say about a book which has been a well known and influential American classic since well over a hundred years? I guess I could start by telling my personal relationship to the story. I get my mail in a town called Ramona, where some of the significant events of the story took place. I live in the nearby San Pasqual Valley where other significant parts of the story happened. I have a close friend member of the Kumeyaay nation, original inhabitants of the area, who tells me stories of his family related to events described in the book. There were many unpleasant happenings. For example, his grandmother's band dug a pit in which to hide the nubile daughters of the village whenever sentries warned that white men were approaching. They would put the girls in the pit and pile boards and brush on it to save them from being raped. I attended the Ramona Pageant in Hemet a number of times. So the story as a whole lies close to my person.With all that,, I have some quibbles with the book. The particular copy I purchased from Amazon is a "print on demand" version which has none of the standard front matter. The story starts abruptly on the back side of the title page. There is a brief and somewhat inaccurate summary of the story on the back cover.As for the story, while it presents itself as historical fiction, it actually descends in large part to the level of political propaganda. Rather than giving a realistic view of the period, it cherry picks the worst possible cases and aggregates them as representative. Not to say that the Indians were always treated well by the white settlers. San Diego County had more than its share of scoundrels, whom Ms. Jackson describes in exhaustive detail, but that is only part of the story. She stated openly that her purpose in writing the book was to stir up the American public to treat the Indians better -- a worthy cause given the general course of events in the latter part of the nineteenth century -- that she overdid it in many instances should not deprecate her for her effort, but should warn us not to take it all too seriously as fact. Important to remember there never was a half-Indan half-Scot woman named Ramona, nor an Indian named Alessandro, nor a rancho owned by SeÃ±ora Moreno. These are all just frames on which to hang various historical incidents in an effort to create a story. Many of the results are not cohesive.Altogether an interesting tale with good local color of the time. But to be redd with caution.

Author Jackson was as strong an advocate of Native Americans as a white Midwest society woman of her time could possibly be (read the terrific Introduction to this edition), and the Native and Spanish points of view of the â€œAmericanâ€ colonization of California, as filtered through her pen, make a fascinating read. RAMONA was made several times as a movie. One was by DW Griffith & can be seen on YouTube; readers should also see the newly available 1926 RAMONA starring Dolores del Rioâ€”in which the heroine conveniently develops amnesia about her years as a Native (!), duplicating white Americaâ€™s own historical amnesia...

Great insight into the lifestyle of women of the late 1880's. Though it is fictional, this drama was the novel of its time that gave romance tears and sadness. Though Ramona changes her life to join a penniless, uneducated peasant-boy, I found the romance a bit ridiculous. Maybe created to entertain housewives you were unfulfilled in their life or to confirm that their lives were plentiful. A foolish girl alters her life after glance into an Native Indian boy eyes that she perceives to be love at first sight. I did not understand why she thought her life would be blessed with joy and not extreme hardship. Why would anyone with any sense dump Felipe who is stable and caring for someone who turns out to be unstable. The story is reminiscence of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility". The Marianne character in particular wherein she meets the grounded Colonel Brandon then drops him for the the suave John Willoughby who later drops Marianne for a beautiful heiress. Then she recuperates in the care of Colonel Brandon who she marries.

The author writes a painful story featuring the mistreatment of Indians by "Americans" in southern California, after it became part of the US. Her style is rather stilted, and highly romantic, but sustained my interest enough to finish it. She wanted this book to be the "Uncle Tom's Cabin" for the Indians [Native Americans]. I don't think either book has completely obtained its objective; or if they did, we have forgotten.

I have read several of Keller's books.I have heard him speak and I admire him and his work.This book did not hold my interest. I felt some of hisexamples were far fetched. Actually, I disagreed withsome of his conclusions. Page 40, Male and Female Idolatries. When we elevate the love partner to this position (idol)we want to be rid of our faults? and our feelings of nothingness?Keller was quoting Ernest Becker with the above statement.Many of the people he used as references left me wondering.I like it better when he writes pure Keller. Counterfeit Godsdoes give the reader a lot to think about.

This was not an easy book to read....I got this book after reading the Reason for God and having serious doubts in my faith due to a string of really bad life experiences in the past 4 years: miscarriage, infidelity, divorce, depression, loss of multiple friendships, death of youngest sibling, the list goes on .... and I'm one of those people who did their best to please God and live a good Christian life style. Yet despite my efforts life just kept hitting me with some really hard punches. After reading the Reason for God last month I was at least convinced that God was real but I was still struggling to understand my life and what happened to me and WHY. I saw counterfeit gods and saved it in my to buy list on Amazon for many months. I was uncertain about reading it fearing it would just make me more angry with religion than I already was. So I took a risk and eventually downloaded it.... After the first chapter I wasn't sure I liked it... the examples given seemed to say that if you weren't fortunate enough to end up with good relationships it was somehow due to your lust and idolatry. The Leah Jacob Rachel marriage debacle didn't help because of the many hot messes in the bible that God allowed its a pretty big one. Its also probably one of the most misinterpreted bible stories used tell women to stay in unloving unfaithful marriages because God will bless them.... Or that ongoing debate of how not wanting to be single and wanting a stable marriage and a family makes you either ungrateful, desperate, or lacking in faith.Despite my opposition I kept reading....I'm glad I did....., the book got MUCH better the explanation of idols as not something we do wrong but actually the foundation of all sin and original sin was the catalyst for idolatry, the desire to live apart from God and manage our own lives as if we can control something..... The concept that in this broken world so many factors play into the lives we end up with and lack of FAITH has NOTHING to do with it was like taking a breath of fresh clean air. That one negative belief that has kept me in bondage for YEARS is that I can earn brownie points with God by being a good church going, tithe paying, Sunday school teaching, bible reading, Christian only music listening, modest dressing, polite, abstaining Christian woman. Finally a pastor was admitting that life isn't all about moral behavior and you can't earn your way into blessings or God's mercy and grace. Don't get me wrong I think moral behavior is important but it has to be for the right reasons , which is to glorify God, frankly most examples I had seen were based on getting human approval or people pleasing which is a form of idolatry. I just have to work on letting God love me in the ways the humans in my life haven't and healing is waiting for me if I'm willing to let go of what the world/church says my life is supposed to look like... God Always will love me and Always has I just couldn't see it because I placed to much importance on my human relationships for happiness. Don't get me wrong I'm not going to become a hermit. I will however be thankful for the family and friends I have left, and focus on replacing my idols with the love God has always had for me.With each passing day being alone is not feeling so lonely. Thanks for this book. Repentance without rejoicing will lead to despair. Rejoicing without repentance is shallow and will only provide passing inspiration instead of deep change. Indeed, it is when we rejoice over Jesus's sacrificial love for us most fully that, paradoxically, we are most truly convicted of our sin. When we repent out of fear of consequences, we are not really sorry for sin, but for ourselves. Fear-based repentance (I'd better change or God will get me") is really self-pity. In fear-based repentance, we don't learn to hate the sin for itself, and and it doesn't lose its attractive power. We only learn to refrain from it for our own sake. But when we rejoice over God's sacrificial, suffering love for us--seeing what it cost him to save us from sin---we learn to hate the sin for what it is. We see what the sin cost God" (172).

This book is really good, but I should have listened to the previous comment about the KINDLE VERSION being difficult to read. The footnotes are not accessible and where pictures should be it just says "can't put photo" or something. I bought this one week ago exactly and it will not let me return it. I wish I could return it and get the hard copy, it is really a good book but I do not enjoy reading it on the kindle because I feel like I am missing a lot and that is no fun.

Such chilling words which began, and subsequently made known, the brutal and unspeakable crimes of the Manson Murders. Vincent Bugliosi's account of the murders and "The Family" was well written and very detailed. His book presented a wealth of interesting information that you never hear about in any television documentary. By reading Mr. Bugliosi's captivating book, the reader, not only gets a better understanding of murders and the crazy, insane motive behind them, but a better understanding of all the people, good and bad, that were involved. It's fascinating to read about all the hard work Mr. Bugliosi put into the Tate - LaBianca investigation which allowed him to successfully obtain death penalty convictions of Charles Manson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, Leslie Van Houton, and a few years later, Charles "Tex" Watson. The Manson Murders were terrible, tragic event and it utimately became Mr. Bugliosi's story, which was again, wonderfully told by him. I can see why it is considered the best crime book ever written. I highly recommend this book. :)

This is one of those books I like to re-read. No, I am not a Manson follower. It's not the person but the process of the trial of some of the most diabolical people in the 60's. I pick up on parts that I had forgotten or may of missed. The author is very specific on details as a lawyer should be. There are parts that drag of which could have been shorter but heck the book has been in 40 years. A good read and highly recommended it.

Amazingly enough (especially considering my interest in the macabre), I had never before picked up this classic true crime account of the Manson Murders. Iâ€™m pleased to say that I have rectified that deficiency, and that I was not disappointed in the least.Bugliosi (who was also the lead prosecutor of Manson and his co-defendants) begins the 600+ page book with the Tate murders themselves. We follow the housekeeper as she enters the property to begin her day, the trauma of the bodies being discovered, and the movements of the police who first entered the scene. We are next led along to the LaBianca murder scene (the murder of an elderly couple also committed by Mansonâ€™s â€œFamilyâ€). From these two bloodbaths, Bugliosi takes the reader along through the (occasionally horribly bungled) police investigation, letting us walk along with investigators as they try to make sense of such seemingly senseless killings.As I said earlier, Bugliosi was the lead prosecutor of the case (and occasional investigator). This is certainly in evidence as Bugliosi approaches â€œHelter Skelterâ€ like a trial in and of itself. Physical evidence, witness statements, and paper trails are carefully presented and thoroughly dissected for the reader. The sheer weight of evidence eventually brought together against Manson and his family is presented here in largely chronological order, and shows just how completely Bugliosi throws himself into his work. There is a good reason why Helter Skelter is considered one of the best true crime books written (easily up there with Truman Capoteâ€™s In Cold Blood).So, grab this book and read it. For such a hefty tome, it goes by very quickly. Bugliosiâ€™s style is intense, but highly readable. Any one who is interested in true crime will obviously love this book, but even if that isnâ€™t your usual genre, this is a compelling read about a charismatic madman and the incredible influence he had, not only on his followers, but on the country as a whole.

You cannot separate an understanding of Charles Manson and an understanding of the trial. The two are inseparable. The vivid descriptions of the witnesses, crime scenes, evidence, and the courtroom drama served to encapsulate one of the longest and most expensive trials to ever take place in US history.I would argue that without Mr. Bugliosiâ€™s book, a gaping hole in the recollections and recounting of the Manson trial would exist. We would also lose a haunting look at the mind of a madman and those who would unquestioningly follow him.Truth in advertising, Iâ€™m an author who writes about serial killers. Because of this, the studies of the most infamous killers of the world is an important aspect of what I do. No serious study of violent crime in the US would be complete without looking at Charles Manson and The Family.They say that time heals all wounds. However, I donâ€™t think the nation ever completely recovered from the wounds inflicted by Charles Manson and his followers. We still seem to be just as fascinated today with what happened on those two days back in 1969 as the nation was during the time of the trial. Iâ€™m not sure if thatâ€™s a testament to our love of the macabre or fascination with courtroom drama.For anyone interested in Charles Manson and the events surrounding the Tate and LaBianca murders, â€œHelter Skelterâ€ is a must-read. I found it to be well-written and chock full of detail that no movie could ever quite cover as well is Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry did.

1 Religion in Pre-Islamic Arabia A Brief Word on Prophets and Religion Prophets do not create religions. Because all religions are bound to the social, spiritual, and cultural landscapes from which they arose and in which they developed, prophets must be understood as reformers who redefine and reinterpret the existing beliefs and practices of their communities. Indeed, it is most often the prophet's successors who take upon themselves the responsibility of fashioning their master's words and deeds into unified, easily comprehensible religious systems. Like so many prophets before him, the Prophet Muhammad never claimed to have invented a new religion. On the contrary, by Muhammad's own admission, his message was an attempt to reform the existing religious beliefs and cultural practices of pre-Islamic Arabia so as to bring the God of the Jews and Christians to the Arab peoples. "[God] has established for you [the Arabs] the same religion enjoined on Noah, on Abraham, on Moses, and on Jesus," the Quran says (42:13). It should not be surprising, therefore, that Muhammad would have been influenced as a young man by the religious landscape of pre-Islamic Arabia. As unique and divinely inspired as the Islamic movement may have been, its origins are undoubtedly linked to the multiethnic, multireligious society that fed the Prophet's imagination as a young man and allowed him to craft his revolutionary message in a language that would have been easily recognizable to the pagan Arabs he was so desperately trying to reach. For whatever else Muhammad may have been, he was, without question, a man of his time. And so, to truly understand the nature and meaning of Muhammad's message, we must travel back in time to that intriguing yet ill-defined era of paganism that Muslims refer to as the Jahiliyyah--"the Time of Ignorance." The Time of Ignorance: Arabia, the Sixth Century C.E. In the arid, desolate basin of Mecca, surrounded on all sides by the bare mountains of the Arabian desert, stands a small, nondescript sanctuary that the ancient Arabs refer to as the Ka'ba: the Cube. The Ka'ba is a squat, roofless structure made of unmortared stones and sunk into a valley of sand. Its four walls--so low a young goat could leap over them--are swathed in strips of heavy cloth. At its base, two small doors are chiseled into the gray stone, allowing entry into the inner sanctum. It is here, inside the cramped interior of the sanctuary, that the gods of pre-Islamic Arabia reside. In all, there are said to be three hundred sixty idols housed in and around the Ka'ba, representing every god recognized in the Arabian Peninsula: from the Syrian god Hubal and the powerful Egyptian goddess Isis to the Christian god Jesus and his holy mother, Mary. During the holy months, pilgrims from all over the Peninsula make their way to this barren land to visit their tribal deities. They sing songs of worship and dance in front of the gods; they make sacrifices and pray for health. Then, in a remarkable ritual--the origins of which are a mystery--the pilgrims gather as a group and rotate around the Ka'ba seven times, some pausing to kiss each corner of the sanctuary before being captured and swept away again by the current of bodies. The pagan Arabs gathered around the Ka'ba believe their sanctuary to have been founded by Adam, the first man. They believe that Adam's original edifice was destroyed by the Great Flood, then rebuilt by Noah. They believe that after Noah, the Ka'ba was forgotten for centuries until Abraham rediscovered it while visiting his firstborn son, Ismail, and his concubine, Hagar, both of whom had been banished to this wilderness at the behest of Abraham's wife, Sarah. And they believe it was at this very spot that Abraham nearly sacrificed Ismail before being stopped by the promise that, like his younger brother, Isaac, Ismail would sire a great nation, the descendants of whom now spin over the sandy Meccan valley like a desert whirlwind. Of course, these are just stories intended to convey what the Ka'ba means, not where it came from. The truth is that no one knows who built the Ka'ba, or how long it has been here. It is likely that the sanctuary was not even the original reason for the sanctity of this place. It is also possible that the original sanctuary held cosmological significance for the ancient Arabs. Many of the idols in the Ka'ba were associated with the planets and stars; additionally, the legend that they totaled three hundred sixty in number suggests astral connotations. The pilgrims' seven "turnings" around the Ka'ba may have been intended to mimic the motion of the heavenly bodies. It was, after all, a common belief among ancient peoples that their temples and sanctuaries were terrestrial replicas of the cosmic mountain from which creation sprang. The Ka'ba, like the Pyramids in Egypt or the Temple in Jerusalem, may have been constructed as an axis mundi: a sacred space around which the universe revolves, the link between the earth and the solid dome of heaven. Alas, as with so many things about the Ka'ba, its origins are mere speculation. The only thing scholars can say with any certainty is that by the sixth century c.e., this small sanctuary made of mud and stone had become the center of religious life in pre-Islamic Arabia: the time known as Jahiliyyah. The Pagan Arabs Traditionally, the Jahiliyyah has been defined by Muslims as an era of moral depravity and religious discord: a time when the sons of Ismail had obscured belief in the one true God and plunged the Arabian Peninsula into the darkness of idolatry. But then, like the rising of the dawn, the Prophet Muhammad emerged in Mecca at the beginning of the seventh century, preaching a message of absolute monotheism and uncompromising morality. Through the revelations he received from God, Muhammad put an end to the paganism of the Arabs and replaced the Time of Ignorance with the universal religion of Islam.

The author explains clearly the historical, secular origins of Islam, of the Shia/Sunni doctrinal schism, of the unfortunate fissiparous consequences of the lack of a central doctrinal religious authority in Islam and the recent perversion of Muhammad's inclusive, ecumenical and morally generous message by such as ISIS and Al Qaeda.

I wanted to get some idea about Islam as a religion to try to understand better the things going on now. The book was enlightening in that respect. The political maneuvering that went on early in the life of Islam seems to have defined the various belief streams in the religion from peacefulness and kindness to violence and from tremendous tolerance to intolerance. Those extremes were present in early Islam and they are still present today. And the struggles between the different belief streams are as present now as they were 14 centuries ago in the early years of the religion.

Very insightful and readable. Highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand the origins and original intent behind Islam. It is VERY different than many governments in Islamic countries heave today. (Just as the behavior of our government, and of .many large Christian organizations in this country is VERY different from anything Jesus ever intended

This book is a good basic biography of the life of the prophet Mohammed, clearly written for the non-specialist who wishes to know more about the events of Mohammed's life and the environment in which Islam developed. I enjoyed Aslan's introduction to the religious atmosphere of pre-Islamic Arabia, of which I had no previous knowledge, and found the introduction of concepts like henotheism to be stimulating and informative for a reader like myself who has some degree of formal knowledge of the study of religion but lacking the technical vocabulary employed by scholars in the field. Likewise, I thought the attempt to rescue Mohammed's teachings about the place of women in Islam and the place of the other Peoples of the Book (among other examples) from later deviations and interpretations of the Quran and Hadith was very much worth writing the book, especially for Western readers. Where I was disappointed with the book was the sort of hazy discussion of his military achievements, and would have liked to see more detail about that aspect of his life, but I imagine Aslan did not want to antagonize or provoke Western readers who would be more than willing to discount the value of the Prophet's life and teachings on the basis of his military campaigns. All in all, this is a very good book for an adult reader who is unfamiliar with the life of Mohammed and the structures and content of Islamic scripture and belief.

UPDATE: Just read some of the other reviews and realized this is the abridged version...Well that's just frustrating... I don't think it changes my review, but maybe explains why I didn't like it very much.***********************************************************I'm not religious, but find religion fascinating. I also find islamic history very interesting, without knowing a whole lot about it.I read Zealot and enjoyed that and was interested in seeing what Aslan brought to a history of Islam.I wanted to understand both the history and beliefs of islam better.A few areas where I wasn't satisfied.1. As in Zealot, Aslan frequently doesn't distinguish when he is talking about what believers believe vs. what historians believe. I had several cases where I couldn't tell if what I was reading was what the koran said or what historians had verified. I know there is a balance (ie it would have been a SLOW book if every sentence was marked as history or koran).. but a chapter or two saying which was which would have been great..2. Almost no time was spent on the basic islamic traditions... Why pray 5 times a day? What about the major holidays? etc... I don't think I really learned much about the religion itself.3. He more or less abruptly stops long before modern times. Very little attention is paid to how modern Islam came about (for example, s***e and sunni are mentioned, but not followed through on... seems like these are sort of a big deal in modern islam, right?).4. In the last few chapters, Aslan tries to explain why some of the uglier beliefs of Islam (attitude towards women, jihad, etc) are misinterpretations of the real message.Which is fine. I'm not one to paint an entire religion by the views of it's extremists. But those chapters feel completely tacked on. Especially when he stops the Islamic history somewhere in the 1100s.It's like he completely changed the subject.Anyways... short summary is I didn't feel like I got the history lesson I was hoping for.

For the first time. I have been able to have a moderate comprehension of why Islam appears to be so complex that there is seldom agreement among its various sects members as to how the Koran is to be interpreted. Reza Aslan explains how the Koran come to be written and how (and who) felt justified to add to the chapters after Muhammad died.Perhaps the processes are "over simplified" but Aslan makes the Islam's internecine warfare somewhat more comprehensible. I have sent this book to, at least, five of my friend .friends.

I am about half-way through it at the moment. I bought it because of Asian's book on Jesus (Zealot: the Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth). It doesn't appear to be as thorough a study as the Jesus book, but it does cover the early life and endeavors of the prophet Mohammed - a subject that has not been nearly explored enough by historians.

This was a clear concise overview of the origins of Islam and life of Mohammed. It is an excellent start to one's understanding of a faith with deep roots to Judaism and Christianity. It will generate a thoughtful dialogue among our interfaith group which seeks to bring respect and understanding within our faith communities.
