#20,373 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
This book started off entertainingly enough. There's a lot of humor. However, it never really moves on from the bumbling, humorous "everyone is out to get me". It was fun and funny the first few times, but by the time she's clearing things almost every page I just wanted to get to the main plot. By the time we actually reached the main plot I just didn't care anymore. I did enjoy the fae-ness of dealing with the Russian witches - you better spell out exactly what you want or you won't get what you thought you were going to. But our main character's constant ability to do, well, everything got annoying quickly as well. Overall the book felt more YA that adult. Not for me.
I really enjoyed the story and the characters, but the writing was terrible. If I hadn't been looking for something light I probably wouldn't have finished it. There were lots of small problems like mixing up 1st and 3rd person, those kinds of things I can ignore. The biggest problem I had was how one-dimensional and unrealistic the villains were. The most flagrant was the higher up FBI agent who shot at her in a room full of FBI agents and claimed he could get away with whatever he wanted. All of the bad guys, and there were a lot of them, were about the same. I wish someone had edited this mess and allowed it become something good.
This was a fun book with engaging characters and decent crime solving. What was lacking was any real emotional feelings from or for the characters. And while I believe the author did send the book to editors as he wrote each chapter (as stated in the afterword), if he was paying them for their services he was robbed. Too many instances of incorrect word usage, nonsense sentences and incorrect apostrophes kept throwing one out of the story.
Picked this Kindle book up earlier this summer, but never got around to reading it. Having read some reviews (after my purchase) that were a tad on the negative side I thought maybe I had made a mistake and wasted my money. This morning looking for something new to read I decided to at least check this series out and maybe read a chapter or two. It now about 6 pm and I've pretty much have spent the day reading the entire book one (and the prequel). I have to say I really enjoyed this book and will be reading the rest of the series. This was just the right kind of story I felt like reading today and I really enjoyed it. A bit humorous and funny, but with some interesting action. I thought the story was well thought out and IMO there wasn't anything wrong with how it was written or formatted. I would recommend it to anyone interested in paranormal fantasy series.
Lots of other reviewers have summarized the plot, so I’m going to skip by that to focus on the real crux of my problems with this book - the writing. What can I say, I write for a living and really, really appreciate good writing. This is not good writing. There’s an interesting premise and fun characters in here, but the bad grammar, mechanics, inconsistent use of contractions (example: “I’m†is used but then the same character says “I will†instead of “I’llâ€), and simplistic style overwhelm the book. I notice that the author’s bio mentions writing lots of books in a relatively short period of time. That’s not producing good work, that’s churning in order to sell as many poorly written books as possible to ensure an income. I like the premise, I like Agatha, not crazy about Fergus, and I like Cat. The FBI agents are one-dimensional and terribly incompetent at best. It’s these dualities that expose the writer’s fundamental lack of skill. He crafts a decent plot but really needs a good editor to mentor him through building his technical writing and world-building skills. He also needs a good copy editor who will catch all the grammar, punctuation, usage, and missing word errors that riddle this book. I’ll keep reading additional ones as long as they’re available through Kindle Unlimited, but, if I have to pay for each book, there’s no way I could justify spending money on such poorly written books.
3 & 1/2 stars. Confusing and illogical bits:Item 1 : Agatha's magic. Very precocious. Very strong. Logical move; start training her early! "No school would have me". Because Aunt Camilla called all of them and scared them. And Grandmother is on the Council. What? So Grandmother teaches her. Surely Grandmother has powerful , helpful friends with special knowledge for the bits she can't teach? Why does Agatha have to go to Quantico, " The only pace that will have her"? Not logical at all. I think Mr Paul couldn't think of a good reason quickly. Note, the Council sends several teaches once she is there. Surely if they are willing to go there, they could have come to her home, were Grandmother is?Item 2 : Her first spells in Quantico seems to be all disasters, but once she is in the field, everything goes swimmingly. Hmm...Item 3 : At Quantico, people seems to know almost nothing about matters Paranormal (in site of having several Weres of various types). They are also very belligerant. This must be so she can give us a history lesson.Mr Paul. You yourself mention the well known facit that the victors write the history books... WWI was known as The Great War until WWII. Which these people did not have. Also, Germany did not start WWI. Serbian terrorist murdered Grand Duke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, and the local police, ie, the Serbiens refused to look for the rest of them. After a whole months, Austria sent federal police, and the Serbs screamed for help from Russia, in the name of Panslavism. Russia declared war on Austria, who called on Germany, as an allt. Germany was not really please, but did as the pact they had said they should. France screamed " Hurrah!!!" and attacked Germany, for no good reason at all. And England (the British Empire), joined, for the first time, on France's side, because they saw a good chance to make their Empire bigger. The USA didn't join until Russia stepped out, because of their revolution. The nastiest war in human history up until then. The Versaille "Peace" is without doubt the unfairest in human history, every.Deaf ears? Of course, but one must not stop trying.Anyway, out in the field, FBI Agents and others know a lot more, but are just as belligerent. What did I like.? The idea, very much. The facit that Agatha uses Old Icelandic as her spel language. (Although it is really modern Icelandic.)One HILLARIOUS thing. Did you do it on purpose, or has someone played a joke on you? General Varmkorv. Varmkorv is Swedish, and it menas " hot dog". The kind you eat.I will definitely read the next one.
