What people are saying they don't like in this book is valid: no color photos except the front and back covers and the charts are sometimes ridiculously hard to make out. For many projects, it's hard to picture what the final product will look like...you can tell there's a lot of variation but what colors?~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~12/2/14 REVISION: I just got several books by Courtney Davis including:101 Celtic BeastsThey're all in color! On the left-hand side of each page is a black line drawing of the image just as the ones shown here are in outline. The great thing is that in ALL 101 images, the right-hand side of the page shows the image in full color!! If you like Courtney Davis (and who doesn't if you like Dover books or Celtic stitchery?), then also consider these books:101 Celtic Illuminated Letters101 Celtic Crosses101 Celtic Knotwork Designs101 Celtic Spirals101 Celtic BordersAs you page through them, you find there are some colorways that attract you more than others. There is so much variety that you quickly get ideas for personalizing your own designs. I find it hard to just guess what colors might go well and what, particularly with these images, will make the animals stand out appropriately. These books really help and can be had very inexpensively. They go great with this reviewed book.~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~Fortunately, the graphs are accompanied by DMC floss numbers and colors so this one will be all in brown. Except...um...my big complaint about Teresa Wentzler designs is too many blended needles and this one calls for 2 different colors in each stitch 6 out of 14 times. So you have dark cocoa brown, then dark cocoa brown with spice, then spice, then spice with medium cocoa brown, etc. So you mix 'n' match 8 colors of floss. I'm not sure that makes any difference except to make threading the needle more tedious. But maybe I'll stitch it and see how it looks. Interestingly, there is never any backstitching--the outline is always the darker shade of floss as shown on the cover designs. And only whole stitches, no partial ones.The largest design has a count of 142 x 100 stitches. I can't tell what it's supposed to be and so will only know if I stitch it, color it or at least get the floss to try to figure it out. None of these fantastic creatures or designs is named; we're just given the stitch count and floss.The only color pages are the front and back cover and not even on the inside of the covers like many Dover books have. There are exactly 6 pages devoted to text only including the title and publication pages. The 43 b&w charts cover the final 42 pages. But no chart is shown in the feature. Are the powers-that-be afraid we'll print the charts and stitch the pieces w/o buying the book? Or do they want to be misleading and not reveal that the charts are hard to discern? I'll just assume they didn't consider it very carefully.I adore this book because I love all that is Celtic and needlework (that's why this review is so long and detailed). Please make sure you also look at this Dover book which complements this book nicely, it being chock-full of borders and Celtic knots:Celtic Charted Designs (Dover Embroidery, Needlepoint)(Of course, this book is a little deceptive too: from looking at the cover, you'd think it's similar to this reviewed book with all the fantastic creatures. But it has only 8 pages of designs, including the cover, that have images from the Book of Kells. All the rest are repeated border designs.)Finally, if you really like Celtic imagery, you can't go wrong with these powerhouse experts on Celtic designing. Some of these are also Dover books on Celtic design are by wonderful authors: Aidan Meehan, George Bain, and Iain Bain.
Just what I had hoped for. Charts are small but easy to enlarge with printers or copiers.
Very interesting designs if you like this sort of thing. I am not totally thrilled with some of the charts but this is still a good addition to my library.
I wanted to try some needlework designs in the Celtic tradition and this is a good resource.
This book has many different designs available. The designs can be a bit small, and a bit difficult to read. I highly recommend taking these charts and enlarging them before starting work on them. There are a great variety in designs, some will take a while to complete, while others can be completed in much less time.
Although the designs appear to be authentic, it would be helpful if there were color illustrations of at least some of the designs.

I like the designs, but the total black and white with tiny blocks makes the patterns hard to read. The designs are good, but lacking in color, so if you feel like playing around with them a bit, this is a great book - especially considering the price. Otherwise, I'd probably recommend staying away from it and going with a more expensive, though much more readable and more colorful alternative.
